Coalition vows to defeat harsh immigration bill [HR 4437]

A U.S. coalition of business, labor unions and religious groups launched a campaign on Thursday to defeat a bill backed by Republicans that would turn some 11 million illegal immigrants into felons. [NOTE: I believe that was downgraded to a misdemeanor.]

The coalition of 24 organizations, many of which rarely agree on politics or economics, denounced the bill passed by the House of Representatives last month [HR 4437] and called on the Senate to enact legislation to include a guest worker program and a path for illegal aliens to gain legal status.

... "We are extremely disappointed with the proposal that passed the House last month," said Thomas Donohue, president of the U.S. Chamber of Commerce which represents some 3 million businesses...

... Andy Stern, president of the Service Employees International Union, which has 1.8 million members, called for comprehensive reform to take control of the border and provided a way for illegal aliens to gain legal status...

... Other groups joining the coalition include associations representing builders and contractors, health care providers, the hotel and restaurant industries, Latino organizations, farm workers, the American Jewish Committee and Catholic bishops...

"A TEMPORARY guest worker program is one thing, eg Kyl/Cornyn,"

Six years isn't temporary! The anchor babies will make sure of that.

I don't care if it's the equivalent of a traffic ticket so long as we get them OUT of here.

I think there are more important national issues than turning some 11 million illegal immigrants into felons too.

Are you serious? They're criminals just by being here illegally. I'd like to see their employers and enablers end up in jail and seriously fined, and the money used for one-way trips home.

I don't think my views are atypical of the majority of voters, who are getting pretty feisty about expressing views.

Uh, if millions of US citizens crossed illegally into Mexico and leeched off their economy, would we be guilty of a misdemeanor? Would we be running around loose? Would Mexico educate, feed, house, provide health care, etc.? Why not?

"It won't make it in the final version..."

There is no certainty that there will be a final version.

The articles on recent polling data that have been posted here indicate a shift of public opinion from pub to dem. If this is accurate, the dems would be less willing to negotiate. The same thing happened in 04 when the dems saw that Bush's re-election was not certain, they walked away from the table and it was only after Bush was re-elected that Kennedy and McCain restarted their negotiation.

The same situation exists now in congressional elections except that the dems have the "harsh republican house bill" to use as a club to sway and motivate the hispanic voter.

Yes, I am serious - of course they are here illegally, but that could be changed again just like Reagan did in 1986 - if they are breaking no other laws, I see no reason to target them over other more important priorities. That's exactly what LAPD came to realize as well - you think Chief Gates was some flaming liberal too?

Those "babies" born here are American citizens, you know that, right? If assimilation works better, we will not all be speaking Spanish and that argument is therefore a slippery slope fallacy.

Perhaps you missed the word "buried" in HuntsvilleTxVeteran's post? Since he is so upset about other illegals, I just want to make sure he knew that advocating violent overthrow of the government was illegal too - he / she never answered my question - but yes, to answer your question, it is illegal to do so (see case cite above, as well as "Treason" in the U.S. Const.).

I've mentioned just a few "more important" issues already - abortion takes more innocent human lives every year, for instance. I also agree Reagan was the best - which is why he signed the last Amnesty law on November 6, 1986.

You also missed the word "buried" - as for the Declaration of Independence, the Constitution thereafter specifically outlawed "Treason" (see case cite above too). Regardless of your opinion re: Civil War, that at least answered the question of State succession in the negative, don't you think?

they are here illegally, but that could be changed again just like Reagan did in 1986 -

If memory serves me correctly, the reason people accepted that amnesty was the assurances that from that point on, our immigration laws and respect for the borders would be completely enforced!

Because, the U.S. economy and rounding up illegals with mass deportations, tearing marriages and families apart with no concern that U.S. citizens are involved, are in my top 30.
