Bin Laden Offers Truce in Purported Tape Terrorist Leader Threatens New Attacks Against U.S. By Yara Bayoumy, Reuters
DUBAI (Jan. 19) -- Osama bin Laden warned that al-Qaida was preparing new attacks inside the United States, but said the group was open to a conditional truce with Americans, according to an audiotape attributed to him on Thursday.
Al Jazeera television, which aired the tape, said it was recorded in the Muslim month that corresponded to December.
"The operations are under preparation and you will see them in your houses as soon as they are complete, God willing," said the speaker on the audiotape, who sounded like bin Laden .
In the tape, broadcast by al Jazeera television, bin Laden said al-Qaida was willing to respond to the fact that public U.S. opinion favored withdrawing troops from Iraq.
"We have no objection to responding to this with a long-term truce based on fair conditions," he said.
Bin Laden issued an audiotape in April 2004 in which he also offered a truce -- on that occasion to Europe, but not to the United States. Bin Laden Messages, Past and Present

Timeline: Bin Laden's Messages
Analysts saw the move at the time as an attempt to drive a wedge between the United States and its allies and to scare wavering coalition members out of Iraq.
In the brief segments aired on Thursday, bin Laden ridiculed President Bush for misreading public opinion which he said showed Americans wanted U.S. forces to quit Iraq.
He also said Iraq had become a recruiting ground for militants. Al-Qaida in Iraq, led by one of bin Laden 's deputies, Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, is one of several insurgent groups fighting U.S. and foreign forces. U.S. and Iraqi officials say many of their members are non-Iraqis.
"Your president is misinterpreting public opinion polls which show that the vast majority of you support the withdrawal of your forces from Iraq," bin Laden said.
"He (Bush) disagreed with this desire and said the withdrawal of troops will give the wrong message to the enemy and that it is better to fight them on their ground than on our ground."
"Reality shows that the war against the U.S. and its allies is not just restricted to Iraq as he claims, but Iraq has become a gravitational point and a recruiting ground for qualified (mujahideen)."
A U.S. counterterrorism official said U.S. intelligence was assessing the tape to determine its authenticity.
Bin Laden 's last audiotape was in December 2004. The interval between then and now is his longest public silence since al-Qaida's September 11 attacks on the United States in 2001.
Saudi-born bin Laden and his right-hand man, Ayman al-Zawahri, are believed to be hiding in a mountainous area on the border between Pakistan and Afghanistan.
On Thursday, Pakistani intelligence sources said four top al-Qaida militants were believed to have been killed in a U.S. airstrike last week which U.S. officials say was aimed at Zawahri.
good point-that does make sense....
Thanks.
I knew it would only be a matter of minutes before the flying moonbats would go back to their kooky agrument that Rove if the center of the evil Bush vortex.
I think Osama lurks on DU.
Exactly. Send in the drones.
Personally, I think garbageBin is deadsville. Let's hope we can still bring Zawahiri in. That one drone from last week had a big impact on he and his pals.
Fire-up some new drones!
I remember the fake story of this.
ha...
These people eat, drink, sleep, crap and breath every day hating the president so much that they transpose his image on everyrhing.
Nobody in this world can do anything w/o the sinister BushRove Co. somehow having a hand in it. Like Kiaser Sosay of "The Usual Suspects" fame.
That sure shows where the Dems were in 1987...against a Republican Administration....and stuff like Osama was a big joke to Mr. Gore. I'd say they were pro-terrorist. Sh** on our guys...Nothing has changed. They're doing the same thing with the wiretap cr**...except that it's to protect ALL OF US...not just Lt. Col. Oliver North.
Osama bin Laden, not feeling well and concerned about his mortality, goes to consult a psychic about the date of his death.
Closing her eyes and silently reaching into the realm of the future, she finds the answer. "You will die on an American holiday."
"Which one?" Osama bin Laden asks nervously.
"It doesn't matter," replied the psychic. "Whenever you die, it will be an American holiday!"
And back at ya. I didn't say it would make sense.
BTW, on a side note, we make sure in our home that we only use the same kind of Christmas tree as the apostle Paul used.
Lil Tommy Daschle is deeply saddened
We get out of Iraq and Afghanistan and we will be spared his rath.
Like that is going to happen.
Screw you, Osama. Bring it on.
Now that the left is openly trying to surrender to the terrorists, can we dispence with the whole "Coalition" nonsense? There are three armies fighting terrorism in Iraq: The US, the UK, and the Free Iraqi forces. It makes no difference if the rest decide to take their water trucks, and hotdog wagons, and port-o-sans and go home tomorrow.
The Oliver North / Bin Laden story is actually an urban legend. Sorry. See http://www.snopes.com/rumors/north.asp for Col. North's own account of what was said.
Between you and me...I think we have them "nailed down" after the Pakistan strike because the "damage" was so severe that they had to get a message to both bini (if he's alive) and/or Zawgawi (sp).
Wishful thinking? Of course...but WE ARE GOOD!!
Detroit is full of Muslims, seems like a reasonable possibility.
Wait a minute - I thought she was the Minority Moron Leader. Oh, now I remember. The MML is a Senate designation currently held by Barbara Boxer.
Never mind.
