Crimean Tatars Call On Kyiv To Restore Their Rights
RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service/Interfax ^ | 12 December 2005

Crimean Tatars Call On Kyiv To Restore Their Rights 12 December 2005 -- Members of the Crimean Tatar Congress gathered in the main Crimean city Simferopol said yesterday that Ukraine's integration with the West should not go forward until Kyiv restores Tatar rights.

Congressional delegates, issuing a statement at the end of the three-day session, accused Ukrainian authorities of disregarding the rights of Crimean Tatars, who were deported en masse by Soviet leader Josef Stalin in 1944.

RFE/RL's Tatar-Bashkir Service reported that congress member Timur Dagci was among the voices calling for Kyiv to recognize the deportation as genocide:

"Our problem -- the problem of Stalin's genocide of the Crimean Tatar people -- is an undeniable fact, so I believe all countries, the United Nations, and the European Union will recognize it and will decide that it was indeed genocide," Dagci said.

Many Tatars have since returned to Crimea, but have been unable to reclaim valuable land and property that was theirs before the deportations.

The Tatar Congress delegates called on the Council of Europe and the European Union to make Ukraine's possible membership in the EU and World Trade Organization contingent on their recognition of Crimean Tatar rights.

You don't even know what's going on in Ukraine. Yanukovych voted with Tymoshenko against Yushchenko. All the commies sozis and social democrats did too.

I side with Ukrainian nationalists whose first loyalty is to their own nation rather than to Russia.

You side with commies and traitors who allegiance is to a foreign power.

Yeah that's why you're favorite candidate in Ukraine is the one funded by foreign governments and individuals who also get's money from his rich foreign wife.

Fact is All of Ukraine both former Yush allies and rivals are realizing that Yushchenko is on a power trip and trying to put Ukraine under the heal of foreigners, especially the EU and Poland.

That position hasn't worked out well for previous Ukraine leaders either.

What's interesting is that while he calls others, particularly military or ex-military traitors, he himself seems to have forgotten to answer the recruiters' calls or maybe he just didn't have the time in his life. The term for that is: keyboard commando.

[Kozak:] Ukraine as part of the Ottoman empire might have been able to escape it's grasp in the 18th or 19th century, like the Greeks and some of the Balkan areas. [...]it may well have been a preferable fate

Have you ever wondered why the Christian nations like Greeks, Serbs and Armenians, which tasted over the long time the tolerant Turkish rule, tend to be very friendly to Russia?

Another question: do you think that Germans, expelled by Stalin sixty years ago, should reclaim their lands in Silesia, Pomerania and East Prussia?

Oh yeah if only Ukraine had been under Muslim rule things would be better.

I never thought I'd see someone defending Muslim tyranny on here.

Constaninople was once the center of Christianity. Now you have to say Christian in hushed tones less the Muslims cut off your head.

If you could change the past history, would you rather have Turks and Tatars defeat Russia and rule the Ukraine?

Ideally i'd prefer neither. In Russia vs. Turks - Russia's worse.

Yes paranoid, it would mean that both of us are online at the same time shooting down your arguments. Tighten that tin foil, the brain control waves are getting in.

Not to mention that a careful search of post would in fact indicate that my messages are less than 2 minutes apart from spanalots the majority of the time as well.

What can I say I'm prolific.

I wish for you to one day know the enlightened rule of the Turks. I don't wish this upon the average Ukrainian, never would, but just for you and those like you who's blind hatred makes you a fool.

Yeah those turks are great, we should replace Yushchenko with a fine Turkish democrat (/sarc):

History Of Asia Minor: 1894-1923
During 1894-1923 the Ottoman Empire conducted a policy of Genocide of the Christian population living within its extensive territory. The Sultan, Abdul Hamid, first put forth an official governmental policy of genocide against the Armenians of the Ottoman Empire in 1894.

Systematic massacres took place in 1894-1896 when Abdul savagely killed 300,000 Armenians throughout the provinces. Massacres recurred, and in 1909 government troops killed, in the towns of Adana alone, over 20,000 Christian Armenians.

When WW1 broke out the The Ottoman Empire was ruled by the "Young Turk" dictatorship which allied itself with Germany. Turkish government decided to eliminate the whole of the Christian population of Greeks, Armenians, Syrians and Nestorians. The government slogan, "Turkey for the Turks", served to encourage Turkish civilians on a policy of ethnic cleansing.

The next step of the Armenian Genocide began on 24 April 1915 with the mass arrest, and ultimate murder, of religious, political and intellectual leaders in Constantinople and elsewhere in the empire. Then, in every Armenian community, a carefully planned Genocide unfolded: Arrest of clergy and other prominent persons, disarmament of the population and Armenian soldiers serving in the Ottoman army, segregation and public execution of leaders and able-bodied men, and the deportation to the deserts of the remaining Armenian women, children and elderly. Renowned historian Arnold Toynbee wrote that "the crime was concerted very systematically for there is evidence of identical procedure from over fifty places."

The Genocide started from the border districts and seacoasts, and worked inland to the most remote hamlets. Over 1.5 million Armenian Christians, including over 4,000 bishops and priests, were killed in this step of the Genocide.

Gary, Romanov

You never related your thoughts on what your fallen comrades in Viet Nam might say about your rabid allegiance to a kremlin that was the agent of death for 57000 in southeast asia.

For you two with over 45 years of allegiance to the US armed forces, one would think your writings might betray at least a hint of ambivalence.

And isn'tit ironic that God is punishing Russia with bitter cold after it unleashed same upon their neighbors when it shut gas valve.

Firstly, I cannot speak for Romanov.

Secondly, they would say its great to hear they are now on our side fighting the GWOT.

Finally, it may or may not be God is punishing Russia, or it simply may be God is using this cold wave to prove to the rest of Europe that the gas shortage is genuine.
