RUSSIA DOES IT AGAIN - Russian tries to delay a formal referral of Iran to the council.

"BERLIN (Reuters) - EU powers began circulating a draft resolution on Wednesday for a February 2 meeting of the U.N. nuclear watchdog asking it to report Iran to the Security Council, but Russia was seeking moves that stopped short of a formal referral.

The EU draft resolution drew scorn from Iran's President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad.

The governing board of the International Atomic Energy Agency will hold an emergency meeting that day on Iran's nuclear work at the request of European Union powers, an IAEA spokesman said.

France, Britain, Germany and the United States are expected to push to have Tehran referred to the U.N. Security Council after it resumed research that could be used for generating electricity or making atomic bombs.

But EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana said European states were considering a Russian proposal that could delay a formal referral of Iran to the council.

Speaking to reporters during a visit to Washington, Solana said Russia had suggested the IAEA emergency meeting should call for a special U.N. Security Council session to debate Iran's case, but that there be no formal referral to the council at that time."

Of course Russia thinks (probably correctly) that they could profit greatly from seeing Israel demonstrate its "never again" policy with Iran.

The price of oil and the demand for its weapons would skyrocket in such a scenario.

Not trying to justify Putin here, but the EU started the ball rolling on the Kyoto Agreement. The EU does things that, even as an American, are sucky.
The EU couldn't even get Europe to agree to agree.
It must be on how they word it, "screw everyone but us"? If Putin is disPUTINg it, perhaps the EU is asking Russia do, er, "extra duty" or something NOT in Russia's best interests. Putin WILL do whatever is in Russia's best interests, as he should. After all, he doesn't work for the EU, but for the people of Russia.
Just a thought.

Not sure about that, they (former KGB or communist) still have this thing about using all means to inflict as much damage to the US and West in general if they have a chance.. Look how they oppose everything US does..

"meeting of the U.N."

Whenever I think of the UN I visualize that large body of politicans in Star Wars and how they did nothing -- yet lived in the lap of luxury in and among themselves.

Well no duh. He's pissed about the Color Revolutions, and Iran is the new way to stick it to us. During the Cold War Kruschev said that Berlin was "the testicles of the West. When I want the West to scream, I squeeze on Berlin." Same thing: the West doesn't want Iran to get nukes - so Putin will do everything he can to make sure Iran does.

The color revolutions are failing in the countries that they occoured in. Pro-Russian people are expected to win the next elections in Ukraine.

Russia has suffered their own terrorist attacks, it would seem to me risky for them to tolerate a nuclear Iran.

I've read that, but it doesn't make Putin any less suspicious of America's intentions. Probably just more contemptuous, frankly.

Russia still has some control over the militaries of Ukraine and Georgia.

Only in Russian version of things..
Don't get me wrong, Russia tries all means available to make them fail, like cutting gus off just before Ukrainian election, but just like Iran with Iraq it will fail, nobody wants another 75+ years of Russian/Commi/KGB rule..
