South Korea newspaper reports Kim Jong-chol as possible next leader of North Korea
South China Morning Post Wednesday, January 18, 2006
A former senior North Korean official says pictures of leader Kim Jong-il's second son are appearing in communist cadres' offices, indicating he is a possible successor, according to a South Korean newspaper.
Kim Jong-il has three known sons and analysts have been speculating for years which one will succeed his father in the world's only communist dynasty. Many analysts say the succession is one of the North's biggest secrets, and some say leader Kim has yet to decide.
The Chosun newspaper quoted the North Korean senior official, who defected to South Korea, as saying many communist officials were hanging the picture of Kim Jong-chol alongside his father's and the picture of Kim Il-sung, Kim Jong-il's late father.
Kim Jong-il, 63, is apparently on an inspection tour of China's booming economy and having talks with mainland officials.
The defector, who was not identified in the Chosun report, said Kim Jong-chol had been appointed to a position in the ruling Workers' Party.
"He is receiving an education to become the successor," the defector said.
The paper did not say when the defector arrived in South Korea, nor how the defector came about the information.
Kim Jong-il's three known sons are Jong-nam, Jong-chol and Jong-un, born to two women. The eldest, Jong-nam, 34, was deported from Japan in 2001 after allegedly travelling on a forged passport.
He was sent to Beijing from Japan and was quoted as saying he was trying to visit Tokyo Disneyland. Analysts said he fell out of favour over the incident.
Jong-chol was born to leader Kim's second mistress and is believed to be about 24. Jong-un is about 22 and has the same mother as Jong-chol. The younger two sons were educated in Switzerland.
Kim Jong-il was 32 when he was picked to succeed Kim Il-sung in 1974 by being elected secretary to the central committee of the Workers' Party of Korea, the formal name of the North Korean communist party.
He took power in 1994 when Kim Il-sung died, aged 82.

Grab a few million bucks from the treasury and retire to some semi-friendly tropical country.
That's safer, easier and more fun than aspiring for power over there.

My take is that he'll never get that far.

As you can see he doesn't seem to have inheirited his fathers snappy fashion sense. Here's one with dad so you can see what I mean. that may be why he has passed over.
That may be why he has passed over but his dad set the bar real high when it comes to style.
