Dedication of the United States War Dogs Memorial
18 January 2005

Posted on 01/18/2006 5:23:59 PM PST by ronaiello

Ron Aiello's vision glows in bronze.

The long-awaited statue, depicting a U.S. Marine kneeling beside his military service dog, stands tall in artist Bruce Lindsay's studio. In a few months, the monument will be moved to a Holmdel site, where it will become the nation's first sanctioned U.S. War Dog Memorial.

"It is life-sized," he said, "but it is larger than life."

Aiello, a Burlington County resident, was among a handful of veteran dog handlers who took on a mission six years ago to see that their canine partners and other war dogs were not forgotten

The Memorial will be dedicated this spring at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial at Holmdel, New Jersey. For further information go to: http://www.uswardogs.org/id3.html

Excellent story! It's about time something like this came out. It's amazing to me only a few years ago did the DoD start allowing retired working dogs to be adopted by military working dog handlers.

Which monument is the one you posted, with the walking soldier or Marine and his trotting dog? Where is it located? I think it's nicer than the newly-completed sitting statue, as the dog is more realistic. The sitting statue has a dog with some kind of swelling in the jaw. Suppose it's supposed to be fur but my German Shepherd never had those swollen things and if he did I would have taken him to the vet pronto.
