Guitarist Jimmy Page of the band Led Zeppelin has been voted the top guitar soloist of all time for the song Stairway to heaven.
According to contactmusic.com, Page's performance topped the survey held by the website aboutguitars.com and beat out the likes of Eddie Van Halen for the track Eruption.
The third place was occupied by the dual guitar solo by Allen Collins and Gary Rossington on Lynyrd Skynyrd's Freebird.
The top 10 guitar solos are:
1. Stairway to heaven - Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)
2. Eruption - Eddie Van Halen (Van Halen)
3. Freebird - Allen Collins and Gary Rossington (Lynyrd Skynyrd)
4. Comfortably numb - David Gilmour (Pink Floyd)
5. All along the watchtower - Jimi Hendrix
6. November rain - Slash (Guns N' Roses)
7. One - Kirk Hammett (Metallica)
8. Hotel California - Don Felder and Joe Walsh (The Eagles)
9. Crazy Train - Randy Rhoads (Ozzy Osbourne)
10. Crossroads - Eric Clapton (Cream)
Best guitar riff ever is a toss up between Can't You Hear Me Knocking and The Ocean.
#2 (believe it or not) Tony Peluso in Carpenters' "Goodbye To Love"
#1 Eric Clapton - Cream "Badge"
That's true. John Mclaughlin never seems to get props, and he's the master. Because he only flirted with rock. Speaking of,what about Steve Howe of "Yes"?
Of course, you can argue to Clapton did some showboating with Cream, who were a "blues rock jam: band anyway. Nevertheless, even Clapton (as a solo artist and with the Yardbirds) knew how to keep his solos from overwhelming the song.
No Joe Satriani? Steve Vai? Puh-leeze.
Agreed...or 'Child In Time'...and where's Robin Trower?
Day of the Eagle!
Sounds like there's at least three of us.
"virtuosos like Leo Kottke "
He's a joy to watch play. I've seen him half a dozen times. Trouble is, he's funny lookin' and can't sing worth a lick. He's got some hellacious guitar chops, though.
Or Nuno Bettencourt.
"Crossroads from Wheels of Fire.
And it's not even subject to argument"
No arguement here.
"I believe I'm sinking down"
The song on the record called Captain Beefheart was recorded live at the Dillo and it ranks way above the top ten.
Absolutely incredible.
No Yngwe? Eddie has a lot better solos than Eruption.
At least Randi Rhodes is in there.
Ted Nugent - Stranglehold

I second Alvin Lee. But also should add Dickie Betts "Jessica" Allman Bros Band.
Les Paul--"How High the Moon". Fun to dance to, as well.
Proof that all opinions here are completely subjective - 59 posts and no mention of STEVE HOWE..
Some things can't easily be compared. for example if you are comparing technique, then page, harrison, clapton. and most of those mentioned wont' make the list.
Malmsteen, van halen, de miola, there's the list for technique. Want a list of jazz influenced, blues influenced, studio layered guitar techniques, then we're looking at a different list.
Exactly!
