I just downloaded a whole bunch of his stuff from
AllofMP3.com.
I'd forgotten how good he was.
Most folks only know him from his days with Mountain (Mississippi Queen). But he did so much more. Raw, bluesy. Great stuff.

VAN HALEN! Changed the way guitar is played and no one has even come close since! Go get the book Van Halen 101! It is a great read about their climb out of the backyard party circuit in LA to super-stardom!

He does,it made him leave the band once it was finished(though he's returned and left again quite a few times since).

Circa 1974, I thought Jimmy Page was God. A lot of people did.
Page included.
Hendrix and Page are something. Freebird is a great fun song.

Seriously I am always surprised when that is not on the A list. It is a righteous tune, IMO>
Cliffs of Dover is at the top of my list ever time.

"I always found that Page was sloppy and derivative. I also have something against "showboating" ie when a guitarist's solo purposely overwhelms the song."Much of Zeppelin's songs were overwhelming, start to finish.
A point you missed, apparently.

I've just looked up AllofMP3.com. Your experience? Ripoffs or unauthorized charges? Any limitations on use (copying) of downloads? Thanks...

We've got steve howe with the dobro, pedal steel, volume pedal, accoustic, page with the violin bow, mandolin, 12 string doubleneck, theramin, these two are at the top of any list i would make. Lots of other greats, but if i were stranded on an island and could choose only two albums.....

I agree. While I don't think my two favorites are solo pieces, even after all these years I truly love to hear....
Roundabout by Yes
Suite Judy Blue Eyes by CSN and Y (I'm not sure about Young)

Anything by Kirk Hammet. If you will include Bass solos, the late Cliff Burton could do things with a 4 string Bass guitar that most folks couldn't do with a 6 string Strat.

Among critics and, uhm, discerning listeners, Stairway to Heaven has always been treated (when mentioned) as a joke, for its excesses and pretentiousness, much like In A-Gadda Da Vida, and Chicago (the tedious musical group, not the city) among many others popular among the unwashed. But heck, somebody must have luvd these things and bought gazillions of them. Now we at least know who. Discriminate!

Freebird has been beaten to death...if I never hear that crap song again it will still be too soon Same with "Stairway..." I love Zeppelin but when that tune comes on the radio I change the station.
It was pretty good the first 250,000 times I heard it but, c'mon! Led Zeppelin recorded a few more songs besides "Stairway."

Jeff Beck's "Ain't Superstitious" should be in the top ten...
