I know, it's hard to compare other than head-to-head.

I agree with you, the NCAA pretends we are all a bunch of morons when they insist that not going to a playoff isn't simply about the Bowl payoffs. And I'm not just talking about the institutions.

As for dynasties, I can't think of a program (of which I firmly believe '95 Nebraska is unmatchable as a team over a single season's performance, including them having some 3 or 4 dozen players play in the NFL) other than the recent USC teams that come close.

Nebraska could have won it in 1993 (errant field goal as time expired against FSU) and 1996 (opened up against a very good ASU squad on the road, starting a new QB and never got started) and did win it in 1994 (beat Miami on their home field), 1995 (beat a very good Florida/Spurier team) and 1997 (another team I'd put up against the all-time best).

They got 3 in 4 years and could have had 5 in a row.

I hate college football. It's decided by the national press. Auburn went 13-0 in 2004 and couldn't land a spot to play for the title.

USC, yadda yadda. You shared the title one year with LSU. What a joke of a sport.

If we had the press voting for congress, senate and president like they do for college football rankings we'd have one heckuva country. All Democrats all the time.

Sounds very similar.

Note that the 2002 USC team has two star NFL players - Carson Palmer and Troy Palamalu - I haven't even really checked the others.

Check that - the backup QB for New England is/was the backup for Palmer and Leinert. So that makes 3 for 2002 team - without doing my homework, just watching playoff teams.

Leinert and Bush are good bets, though always hard to predict. but Leinert losing 2 games in three years is a better indicator than normal for Heisman to Pro conversion. After watching that offensive line handle Texas, I think I would rather have a lineman than either of the "stars".

USC went through some very weak years - 11 game losing streak to UCLA and 8 game losing streak to Notre Dame - in the '90's. Many had considered them over as a top team - private school, etc. Then they answered like this.

My all time favorite player is still Turner Gill. Got to love a guy who is starting QB and shortstop for Nebraska.
