PRIME Minister John Howard has regained popularity lost after pushing through his industrial relations reforms, the first Newspoll of 2006 shows.
Meanwhile, Labor has lost the narrow lead it had at the end of last year, although Opposition Leader Kim Beazley is now in a personally stronger position, today's Australian newspaper reports.
The poll revealed 52 per cent support for the Coalition with Mr Howard as leader on a two-party preferred basis, up three points since the end of 2005.
Labor trails on 48 per cent, down three points from the end of last year.
When it came to the question of who would make a better prime minister, Mr Howard had the support of 56 per cent of voters, with Mr Beazley managing only 25 per cent support.
However, 36 per cent of voters were satisfied with the ALP leader's performance, up by three points since the end of 2005.
Congrats!
I expected that this would be the case. I think opinion polls are also showing that Labor will go out in most states as well.
Is this partially the result of the ALP's handling of the Cronulla incidents at the state level?
For years the ALP government has gone soft on Lebanese ethnic gangs. The Cronulla were the end results of years of neglect of Lebanese gang violence. The NSW opposition leader is highlighting this fact.
