Big Security Council Members Agree on Iran

Powerful members of the U.N. Security Council agreed Monday that Iran must fully suspend its nuclear program, Britain's Foreign Office said following a meeting aimed at forging a common response to Tehran's decision to resume uranium enrichment activities.

Diplomats also announced plans to call for an emergency meeting of the International Atomic Energy Agency board of directors on Feb. 2-3 to discuss what action to take against Tehran for removing some U.N. seals from its main uranium enrichment facility in Natanz last week.

The Foreign Office said all five veto-wielding permanent members of the Security Council _ the U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China _ and Germany had shown "serious concern over Iranian moves to restart uranium enrichment activities."

They agreed on the need for Iran to "return to full suspension," according to a statement.

"the U.S., Britain, France, Russia and China _ and Germany"

Who's going to do the heavy lifting when push comes to shove?

Both comments above are right on target.

This is a waste of time, and has the smell of Euro-weasels about it.

The US should stand back and let the appeasers demonstrate just how little competence and effectiveness they really have.

Instead, Rice will step forward and let the Ayatollahs throw mud on her first.

Rice is an idiot.

Just heard a Fox News Alert that they are calling for an 'emergency meeting' of the UN Security Council for whatever that is worth.

Only force will stop the Mullahs.

Anything else is a waste of precious time.

Not very fast, though. The meeting of the Atomic Energy Board is two weeks from now? Doesn't sound to me like they're in a big hurry.

They can't make it public, but here's what just happened:

Iran is on Double Secret Probation.

They all will. Nobody goes into Iran alone if it is done with an invasion. China can not afford to be left out and have no say and Russia is not that stupid a second time.

That no matter what, China and Russia will veto anything put to a vote.

Yes, but in diplomatic years, this is rather quick. Think of how long we poo-pooed on Iraq?

Chances are they will abstain the 1st round.

When we actually want them to do something that will accomplish something tangible, we may find some vetoes.

Please explain. Russia I can understand.
But why is it in China's strategic interests to remain aloof from participating in resolving a crisis in the area of the world's biggest source of energy?

Nothing like this is ever going to happen.

Russia and China are working for, not against, the Iranians.

Germany has a conservative chancelor who wants to re-build the ties with England and the US that Schroeder destroyed.

So France will be the weakest link as usual and will keep mostly quiet.

Nothing will come of this. The US and England will take a hardline stance, France and Germany will act weakly, and China and Russia will protect Iran.

Then why did they agree to this?

They know we have no problem ignoring the UN and go in with our own coalition, there is no way they let us do that again and sit in both the 2nd and 3rd largest oil producers in the world.

No, it is best for them to go along for the ride and at least have a say. I guess time will tell if I am blowing smoke, but they can not afford to be left out and have somebody else having that much control over the worlds oil.

Good point. If I know GWB, if he's going in anyway to stop the nuclear development, he will also set up a transitional government, elections, etc. like we did in Iraq. And it won't have as much interference as Iraq with the terrorists coming in from Iran.
