Right wing conspirators.

Obsessed with "majority" rights

Less than antagonistic towards U.S. Interests

Defying conventional wisdom

And the status quo

Using open discussion of issues

Alleged "exchange" of "ideas"

Aided & abetted by a so-called "universal franchise"

And a nominally "free" press.

Attempting to overthrow by "democratic means"

A beloved Prime Minister

A government that knows what's best for you

We're not making this up

Choose your Canada

C in NYC: It is much better than this. The is NO enthusiasm for the lib campaign. Paul Martin drew a "crowd" of 50 people at a rally in Montreal this weekend. To compare this, imagine if President Bush couldn't draw more than 500 people to a rally in Houston a week before a presidential election. Do you understand what this means? The libs are in a going down very hard.

There will be a conservative majority government in Canada next week. Possibly a huge majority.

Brian Mulroney won his first majority in 1984 with 50% and was reelected in 1988 with 43%. In 1993 Jean Chretien won with 43% then in 1997 with 38% and in 2000 with 40%. So as you can see from recent Canadian political history, it doesn't take much to win a majority. My take is barring a sudden shift in the political tide in the homestretch week of the election, Canada will see its first non-Liberal majority government since 1984.

"Canada will see its first non-Liberal majority government since 1984."

Just to be accurate, as Mulroney was re-elected with a majority in 1988, it would be "... first non-Liberal majority government since 1993".

Paul Martin's government and campaign have been so bad the Tories are now saying they have a shot at a riding in PEI and are holding a rally there today.

Charlottetown - a Canadian city.

Tory support rising rapidly.

In Charlottetown.

In PEI.

We did not make this up.

Choose your Canada.

Huge majority with the Bloc Quebecois as the official opposition...

I like that strategy - go to some of the more ignored areas. I would spend a lot of time in Ontario and Quebec, but also make a trip out west to the BC coast, then an event in Edmonton, Regina and Winnipeg - plus a trip to the Arctic to make the Conservatives a party representing coast to coast to coast...

Andrew Coyne has the latest polls. The polls are several days behind the actual sentiment of the public. This will be a large majority, perhaps historic. CPC is ahead of the libs in Quebec. Martin drew 50 people to a "rally" in Montreal on the weekend. Think of that 50 people!! Harper can draw 1000 in just about any riding in Canada right now, except for the hard core BQ areas of Quebec.

Beats me - the Star article doesn't say (scroll down to near the end).

Considering the closest any Tory got on PEI last time was about 20% down, it sounds crazy to me, but then if you'd told me when the writ dropped that the Tories would be polling ahead of the Liberals in Quebec I'd have told you that was crazy too.

According to somebody posting on electionprediction.org, it's Charlottetown. I get the sense the numbers are changing by the minute in Atlantic Canada right now.

Interesting. Cardigan was the closest PEI riding in 2000. The Progressive Conservative candidate lost to the Liberal by 276 votes. The Election Prediction project had that riding as too close to call in 2004. The Conservative Party candidate got trounced (like every other conservative in PEI), even though the Liberal was damaged by scandal - but took over 30% of the vote. I think Charlottetown was even more of a blowout in 2004.

The elephant/donkey came from Thomas Nast, a famous late 19th century political cartoonist. He was pretty much a Republican and largely focused his hatred on Boss Tweed.

Andrew Jackson was called a jackass by his opponents and then twisted the symbol to his own benefit. But Nash made it popular. It was meant to refer to an anti-Civil War faction, but it stuck.

The elephant came later.

I'm currently perusing the "riding talk" BBS for the Charlottetown riding and it appears the current Liberal MP chose to make his one vote against party line a vote against SSM.

While many of us here might applaud this, it's a university town and probably did not take kindly to it. However, the university-town status of this riding may mean you're right after all.

And BTW, I've decided I will have to become one of those posters who are constantly saying bad things about Canada - at least until after the election. Between posting about here and following the news and blogs on the subject, I'm getting nothing else done! ;)

In Canada outside Quebec, the Tories hold a 45-31 lead over the Liberals.

Man oh man, could you believe it?
