they don't count the illegals. I know for NY, I cannot see how the population downstate is doing anything but rising. the roads are more crowded, there is an endless stream of new retail stores being built - all of which are crowded. apartment buildings going up everywhere.

if everyone is leaving NY, why am I seeing this?

The illegal population is growing more than the American population is leaving Mass.

The US Census Bureau numbers are refering to America citizens and tax payers.

"On Beacon Hill last week, the big issue for Massachusetts lawmakers was whether tuition should be reduced for illegal aliens at the state's public colleges..."

For census purposes, they DO count illegals. Some republicans in the house have presented a constitutional amendment to change this.

I've heard the two seats NY are going to lose are coming from upstate.

1. Depopulation of upstate. Places like Rochester, Syracuse, and Buffalo (and their suburbs) are losing population like crazy.

2. Low birth rates. Who the hell can afford to raise a young family in downstate New York?

NYS---Net loss in population every year for the past 20 years.

Downstate may be different since NYC seems to be staggeringly immune to the economic woes of the state. IN the upstate regions, there are small towns where a few people are left. Most of them do not migrate to the cities, but just move out.
