Chileans vote for new president (Socialist woman leading polls)

Chileans are heading to the polls to vote in a second round of elections that will give them a new president. The candidate leading the opinion polls is Michelle Bachelet, of the governing centre-left coalition. If she wins, she will be Chile's first female president.

Her rival is conservative billionaire businessman Sebastian Pinera, who says it is time for a change of government.

The election is the fourth since the country returned to democracy in 1990 after 17 years of military rule.

BBC doesn't say in so many words, but FoxNews said Michelle Bachelet is a socialist, Pinera is a conservative self made businessman. Unfortunately, it looks like the socialist may win the run-off election.

I also found a map of Latin America, sadly showing how socialism is taking over the continent, right in our own backyard. You can click on the picture to take you to the article with more info. (I don't know why they don't show Cuba.)

I looked again and it seems they only colored the countries that had elections last year or having them this year. The map is from an earlier dated article, I just thought it was very telling.

"Latin America's political map could find itself being redrawn as 12 of the region's countries prepare for presidential elections between November 2005 and the end of 2006. "

South America is a lost cause. Better for them to live for 50 years under socialism. That's what it takes for these people to finally learn lessons just like the East Europeans have. Unfortunately people do not learn from other people's mistakes. They only learn from their own, and that's also rare.

Sad to hear. Chile is a beautiful country. Years ago I had given some thought to retiring there but it's always been a bit politically unstable.

Bookmarked to return to, after the creeping socialism in the USA is repelled.

Looks like it is time for Augusto Pinochet and his supporters to go back to work in Chile and restore dignity.

The key words on the map are "Latin America" and the states shown in gray are not considered to be Latin, instead they are French and Dutch.

Every state in Central America, except for Belize is Latin.

He's kind of an enigma to me--kind of like a conservative liberal or a liberal conservative.

Well, back to the days of the "Banana Republic" for S.A.

At least they probably won't screw up things as bad as Africa's govt's.

Def. Optimist: A person who goes to church but does not vote or otherwise follow politics.

Def. Pessimist: A person who follows politics. Church, religious faith, etc serves only to prevent complete despair.

Funny how in the days since Ancient China, etc, people have not evolved socially.
