“Vast majority of U.S. troops forced to leave Iraq” (Murtha gets his mug in Aljazeera)

John Murtha, the top Democrat of the House defense appropriations subcommittee predicts that "the vast majority" of U.S. troops deployed in IRAQ will be forced to leave the country by year's end, or maybe sooner.

"I think the vast majority will be out by the end of the year and I'm hopeful it will be sooner than that," Murtha, the veteran U.S. congressman who urged the BUSH administration in November to set a withdrawal plan for the occupying forces in IRAQ, told the CBS "60 Minutes" show, according to excerpts of the interview released by the network.

Murtha further predicted that the U.S. President would be forced to accept an Iraq pullout plan as inaction will lead to the Republicans lose control of Congress in the November midterm elections.

"You're going to see a plan for withdrawal," he insisted.

Murtha believes the Congress will pass a plan calling for pullout of U.S. troops from IRAQ because of rising voter dissatisfaction with the deteriorating situation in the war-torn country.

"I think the political people who give advice will say to him, 'You don't want a Democratic Congress. You want to keep a Republican majority, and the only way you're going to keep it is by reducing substantially the troops in Iraq,'" Murtha said.

Last November, the first veteran of the Vietnam War elected to Congress, sparked controversy by demanding the U.S government to withdraw all American forces in IRAQ in six months, insisting the war was grounded in "a flawed policy wrapped in illusion."

At first the BUSH administration strongly rejected the congressman's demand and criticized it saying that it was tantamount to "surrender". But later it toned down its criticism, saying that the U.S. PRESIDENT GEORGE W. BUSH just had an honest policy disagreement with him.

It was easy enough for the US to defeat the Iraqi armed forces, but occupying a country where everyone hates you is much more difficult.

You shouldn't believe what you see on TV. Eveeryone in Iraq doesn't hate us. In fact, it's just the opposite.

How many more terrorists will be encouraged to kill our soldiers and innocent women and children thanks to Murtha and his ilk? How many have died? How many more will die? These people are sick. "War hero" my foot.

What it takes to bring down a nation is a fool getting his country involved in military situation his country cannot win (for example, Hitler's attempt to occupy the Soviet Union). Murtha loves his country, and is not a traitor. But I suspect Bush is foolish. It was easy enough for the US to defeat the Iraqi armed forces, but occupying a country where everyone hates you is much more difficult.

Murtha is an idiot...despite his former service which I respect. We are not occupying Iraq anymore. There is a dully elected government, voted for by millions of Iraqis who voted in truly free elections that we made possible (and they know it and are grateful for it), they are our ally against the terrorists, and they want us there until they are on their feet.

Murtha and the complicit media are selling out our soldiers, our fellow countrymen, while they are on the field of battle. He should be cenbsored and ejected from Congress IMHO, the media that is spouting his horrid drivcel should be boycotted into bankruptcy.

Are you sure that everyone in Iraq hates America? How about the purple-fingered voters? Perhaps the people who are able to read a free-press newspaper (there are now over 100 in Iraq) every morning? What about the demonstrators? They don't have to worry about being rounded up and executed in the town square anymore, or thrown out of windows, or losing their tongues. I suspect that most of your "everyone hates America because..." crowd has NEVER spent any time in other countries. You all seem to think that everyone else in the world enjoys the same freedoms we do. NOT true. If you really don't believe it's worth the fight to plant the seed of freedom and democracy in the Middle East, you may want to get out a little more often. Liberals are always shouting about how being selfish is horrible- well, isn't not wanting other "world citizens" to be free a little selfish? I can't believe you want to hord all this freedom for yourself! You probably didn't offer your home to Katrina victims either.

Your analogies are not relevant to our Iraq situation. Hitler didn't intend to bring freedom to the Russians. Russia is a little bigger than Iraq and had a pretty good military. Also, our plan is to leave when we are finished, unlike Hitler's goal of creating Germania across Europe. Big difference.

Everyone I know hates people who don't like America, so shouldn't you leave? Considering your generalization that all Iraqis hate Americans and therefore we should get out, my belief that all un-American leftists are hated should be sufficient for them to line up at the airports and get the heck out, right?

It's one thing to voice your opinion on the war as a concerned citizen. It's another to broadcast it to the press, knowing that it will be heard around the world. You probably wouldn't like everyone knowing about a close relative's credit problems or that your mother is a drug addict, would you? It's no one else's business, is it? Why then are the Murthas of this country spouting off about what they think we're doing wrong to the world? If he's truly interested in saving soldier's lives, he'd arrange meetings with military leaders and the President instead of the press. You have to admit that makes more sense than telling a group of journalists, who have no idea of military strategy or authority to change ANYTHING in this situation.

Murtha has been in combat and should know that what he says is being used by the enemy and that is why most objective people say he is harming our efforts.

Lastly: I've noticed that many liberals refer to our country as "the US" or "this country" instead of "our country" or "my country". Why is that? I surmise it's because you don't like this country and wish you weren't American.
