Princeton CAP magazine piece Kennedy read was satire
Powerline ^ | January 14, 2006

You can read the full Prospect article on Kennedy's site. Its subject is a lawsuit by a female Princeton student who wanted to be admitted to an all-male eating club at the university. As the title suggests, it argues more broadly that elitism isn't a bad thing. The article is written in an arch style that doesn't do much for me, and I don't think it's very good. But there isn't anything especially offensive or even controversial in it.

Dinesh D'Souza was the editor of Prospect at the time, and he confirms that the article, by H. W. Crocker III, now an editor for Regnery Books, was a satire:

The essay may not have been funny, D'Souza acknowledges, but Kennedy read from it as if it had been serious instead of an attempt at humor. "I think left-wing groups have been feeding Senator Kennedy snippets and he has been mindlessly reciting them," D'Souza said. "It was a satire."

The bottom line is that if this is the most "offensive" article CAP was responsible for in its decade-plus of existence, the Democrats' whole guilt-by-association effort was much ado about nothing. If being associated, however remotely, with attempts at humor that don't turn out to be very funny is enough to place a public figure beyond the pale, the Democrats had better stay away from Al Franken.

I think they are all running away from the hearings altogether.

I think the MSM is running away from these hearings, too.

Bush's second appointment! This is no small matter - it is a great day for conservative America!

This should be entered as Exhibit A at the insanity trial of this fool.

Is Dan (the story was true -- even if the evidence had to be forged) Rather consulting for Teddy these days?

I hope some senator enters this into the record when the Senate goes into floor debate on Judge Alito..... and spend sometime setting it up.

Yes. And ends by saying: "I don't know why Senator Kennedy is so against Justice Alito's confirmation -- It's not like he killed somebody."

With the increased number of published comments about Kennedy's disgraceful performance on the Judicial Committee, I suspect/hope that this is the beginning of the end to his political career.

Some Democrat "talking heads" are beginning to distance themselves from this pickled buffoon.

Ol' Ted never was funny and according to people who witnessed his debacle at the questioning of Judge Alito, Kennedy's hands were shaking and he seemed to have a glassy out of it stare. Even if he were to resign his Senate seat, there would be endless numbers of Kennedy's to run in his place. They all think the same (if you call that thinking) so good old Mass. is going to be represented by Kennedy's into the year 3000. What a prospect!!

It's not insanity. He is merely Feinstein's puppet.

Remember her telling Teddy, "now read the last line 'and now come women'"

Re Kennedy's dog - who apparently is his constant companion in the Capitol Building!!!!

Splash is a Portuguese Water Dog, a breed which look like poodles, but obviously on the "high-end/low-end' scale, are much higher, so his is named for his love of water.

Proving that Kennedy is too dumb to be allowed to vote, nevermind sitting on any committees.

I heard Rich Lowry say this on Hannity & Colmes last night - I had no idea he was serious!

So Fox knows? Oh, I hope Brit mentions it Monday night!

I think the Cape Cod Orca is completely divorced from reality.

I doubt he has any idea of the figure of derision and jokes he's become.

He's insulated by stupidity, a protective staff, money and booze.

He probably really thinks he's a revered statesman, that everyone's forgotten Mary Jo, all the other scandals from his past.

I think he would be shocked, shocked to realize what the world outside of Mass. thinks of him.

What a genuine smile! I bet the people who worked with him loved to see that side of his character.
