In the wake of major decisions on public display of the Ten Commandments, the American Civil Liberties Union is asking a federal court to order removal of a Tennessee courthouse exhibit.
"The posting of the Ten Commandments sends the message that only certain believers can receive justice at the courthouse," said Hedy Weinberg, executive director of ACLU of Tennessee.
The ACLU filed the motion yesterday in U.S. District Court.
Weinberg said "residents should not be made to feel like second class citizens because they do not hold the prevailing religious beliefs promoted by the county government."
The display in Rutherford County was approved by a 16-5 vote of the county commission in April 2002, but two months later, federal court Judge Robert Echols issued a preliminary injunction removing it.
The decision was stayed, however, pending a decision on similar cases in two Kentucky counties, McCreary and Mercer.
In each of the counties, the Ten Commandments is displayed among historical documents. The Rutherford County display includes copies of the preamble to the Tennessee Constitution, the National Motto, the National Anthem, the Declaration of Independence, the Magna Carta, the Bill of Rights, the United States Constitution and the Mayflower Compact.

I really fear the ACLU. Seems no one can stop them.

One of the Kentucky cases was decided just this week, I believe. Sorry ACLU, but it went against you. You'll have to find another lunch ticket.
ACLU mentality: We had to destroy the First Amendment in order to save it.

It's like this:
Posting a billboard saying "Coke is the Real Thing" sends a message that all other things are unreal and therefore less valuable.
Get it now?
But Coke is the real thing.
That wouldn't make me view my Pepsi drinking buddies any differently.
Actually it was on Dec 20th. And not only did the ACLU loose, it was how, as they got a verbal smack down in the process.

Stand strong, Rutherford County!
Given the Mercer decision (warning - pdf) on Dec 20, 2005, they know full well this suit will be thrown out. This is a waste of time and OUR money.
With Alito on the SCOTUS, the tide may be turning on establishment issues. The schoolyard bully ACLU may just about to get a bloody nose.
But your Pepsi buddies will view themselves differently.
They will be offended and realize that Coke's realness is oppressing them. They will be resentful and believe that realness is being denied them. How sad for them. Making a definitive statement about Coke's realness and posting it in places where refreshements are served implies the inferiority of all other beverages. Surely Pepsi drinkers' thirst cannot be slaked while statements about Coke are on display.
Hopefully this marks a turning point in the ACLU's anti-Christian crusade. Now if we can get legislation passed barring them from recovering "attorney's fees" when they prosecute one of these cases successfully, they're out of the Christian-bashing business.
Correct. The 10 Commandment cases against us have been 5-4, with SDO in the majority. Adios SDO and hello Sam Alito. I see a flip flop on this issue coming real soon. I have to believe Roberts is going to be solid on this issue, so that is an assumption here.
Well, what do you expect from an organization founded by a communist?
How long until the ACLU attacks the commandmants carved into the supreme court building? I wonder how far that will get.
