Schwarzenegger's re - election chances up
The Argus ^ | Jan. 13, 2005 | Steve Geissinger

A recent poll shows the born-again "moderate" Republican governor has gained back some popularity, especially in the Bay Area, and is now in a dead heat with Democratic competitors.

"Our survey demonstrates that Schwarzenegger's retreat from the more conservative rhetoric and agenda he brandished during the latter part of 2005 has paid off among middle-of-the road voters," said Melinda Jackson, director of the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University.

The governor's job performance rating among voters in a Democrat-leaning state has climbed from 36 percent positive and 53 percent negative in September, to 40 percent positive and 51 percent negative this month.

Good grief!!! I leave this thread to go watch a little "Play-off" NFL football and come back to find Alia trying to "rise above it all" and putting down all but four or five desperate moderates she agrees with on a thread that I officially "killed" at #200!!!

What the heck is going on here? Daddy wants to know RIGHT NOW!!!

I would be with you on all you said about McClintock if not for what he did in staying in that special election till the end.
For me that was a "What is he thinking?" moment.

If he did not do that, I think he would be many more points in the state up compared to where he is now.

In any case he needs to work on his likability. He has to motivate more than conservatives to vote for him in California.

I think his self marketing as been real lacking.
Had he gotten a better promotion team and not stayed in the last Gov. race till the end, he could be near ready to be electable now.

IMO, he is not electable at this time for Governor.
Sure, if a miracle happened and he won a primary against Arnold I would vote for him, but he would lose against the Democrat anyway.

The Fury of McClintock Scorned

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/991136/posts

Why would McClintock risk handing the governorship to the most liberal Democratic candidate on the ballot? The answer is revenge — an irrational emotion in politics that often trumps all others. McClintock is getting even.

McClintock, who was first elected to the Assembly in 1982, has spent almost his entire adult life either holding public office or working in conservative politics. He twice ran for statewide office, losing both times because of defections within his own party.

but there is NO EXCUSE for people who claim to be conservatives to vote with the Democrats and trying to get others to do so as well.

I agree. That past special election was very revealing.

What was outrageous was he never got out of the race when he was still way down to Arnold even a week out.

It could have easily sabotaged the Governor's race for the Democrats because they had one Democrat candidate (Bustamante) and two Republicans in what ended up being a three way split for the vote.

It was selfish, inept and made me doubt his sanity at that time. It was like he was making the statement that if he couldn't have the Governor's position, he would sabotage it so the Democrats could win.

A Phone Call in Need of Instant Replay (Sen. Burton calls McClintock -- what really happened)

http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-news/985238/posts

McClintock did not identify Burton by name, but he said in an interview later that day that he had talked to a congressman about the campaign. After summarizing for the lawmaker Schwarzenegger's positions on various issues, McClintock said, he had won a convert.

But Burton, an Indiana Republican, came forward Thursday to say he had placed the call — and to dispute any suggestion that he had told McClintock that he should remain a candidate.

Burton said he had been unwavering in urging McClintock to step aside so that a Republican would stand the best chance of winning the Oct. 7 election. He said he had not left any misimpressions that he wanted McClintock to stay in the race.

Burton, one of the more conservative members of Congress, also said McClintock had seemed to suggest that it would be acceptable for a Democrat to hold the governor's office, because he might create a clamor for a Republican in 2006.

====

We actually take great pains to avoid bashing McClintock, even though there is plenty of ammunition of his own creation.

But the bottom line is that no way would he ever win the governorship of CA.

I'm not quite sure, but I wonder if Tom is being served very well here, really.

He's not running against Arnold, he's running WITH him, isn't he?

"Oh, all the major papers in that election wondered what was going through McClintocks mind in staying in the race."

You mean all the liberal papers ?

"Lots of articles, opinions and as you say editorials pissed off at McClintock."

Doodlelady put it best. If he had gotten out of the recall race, Grey Davis would still be Governor today. It's that simple. Want proof ?

Total number of votes for McClintock: 1,161,287

Total number of votes separating recall vs. not recalling Gov. Davis: 968,491

You can check the official voting totals at http://www.ss.ca.gov/elections/sov/2003_special/contents.htm It'll back me up. ;-)

" I prefer moderate Republicans to socialist Democrats"

The socialist democraps are for the most part more conservative than the so called "moderate republicans"

A lot of room you have to spout off living in L.A. that doesn't have even one Republican registration over democrap registration Assembly district in the entire city.

Excellent summation and closing arguments! You just put Alia and all her touchy feely analysis of her "vision" of the bickering she's been promoting to abject shame! So sad to watch!!!

Oh! And Alia!! You did it again and admitted it on Reply #215!!!

Thank you. Numbers 211 and 212 were so right on! For me, it is quite comforting to see other folks catching onto their scam.

You wanna know what really, really blew me away? How far Arnie distanced himself from the far right during the SotS speech. I was expecting him to move left, but he did about everything he could to throw it into the face's of the ilk.

What outrageous behavior ? Refusing to fall in line behind the lemmings to elect a liberal RINO Governor ? Good for him.

We could expect someone from DU to post just as you did by the way. To suggest it is OK to split the Republican vote would only benefit who? Democrats

You are suggesting how to self sabotage the Republican party IMO. We don't need any more things like that from the conservative side in California.

AGAIN, Arnold said he was here to bust things up and when he went the people to do that, the conservatives let him down. He tried and that is the opposite of being a liberal RINO Governor. After he was screwed, he had to get along, are you surprised?

I think he has about a third of the conservatives behind him at most.

That estimate is close

If all who voted for McClintock during the recall were Republicans, they comprised about 37% of the registered Republicans who cast votes.

Ah-nold will never be mistaken for Reagan. He is the reincarnation of the diseased liberal statism embodied by Earl Warren and George Christopher. That's the ideology Reagan sought to bury for all time coming from the GOP. McClintock was the Reagan in the race.
