A recent poll shows the born-again "moderate" Republican governor has gained back some popularity, especially in the Bay Area, and is now in a dead heat with Democratic competitors.
"Our survey demonstrates that Schwarzenegger's retreat from the more conservative rhetoric and agenda he brandished during the latter part of 2005 has paid off among middle-of-the road voters," said Melinda Jackson, director of the Survey and Policy Research Institute at San Jose State University.
The governor's job performance rating among voters in a Democrat-leaning state has climbed from 36 percent positive and 53 percent negative in September, to 40 percent positive and 51 percent negative this month.

Why would McClintock risk handing the governorship to the most liberal Democratic candidate on the ballot? The answer is revenge — an irrational emotion in politics that often trumps all others. McClintock is getting even.
McClintock, who was first elected to the Assembly in 1982, has spent almost his entire adult life either holding public office or working in conservative politics. He twice ran for statewide office, losing both times because of defections within his own party.
I agree. That past special election was very revealing.

McClintock did not identify Burton by name, but he said in an interview later that day that he had talked to a congressman about the campaign. After summarizing for the lawmaker Schwarzenegger's positions on various issues, McClintock said, he had won a convert.
But Burton, an Indiana Republican, came forward Thursday to say he had placed the call — and to dispute any suggestion that he had told McClintock that he should remain a candidate.
Burton said he had been unwavering in urging McClintock to step aside so that a Republican would stand the best chance of winning the Oct. 7 election. He said he had not left any misimpressions that he wanted McClintock to stay in the race.
Burton, one of the more conservative members of Congress, also said McClintock had seemed to suggest that it would be acceptable for a Democrat to hold the governor's office, because he might create a clamor for a Republican in 2006.

We actually take great pains to avoid bashing McClintock, even though there is plenty of ammunition of his own creation.
But the bottom line is that no way would he ever win the governorship of CA.
I'm not quite sure, but I wonder if Tom is being served very well here, really.

AGAIN, Arnold said he was here to bust things up and when he went the people to do that, the conservatives let him down. He tried and that is the opposite of being a liberal RINO Governor. After he was screwed, he had to get along, are you surprised?

If all who voted for McClintock during the recall were Republicans, they comprised about 37% of the registered Republicans who cast votes.

Ah-nold will never be mistaken for Reagan. He is the reincarnation of the diseased liberal statism embodied by Earl Warren and George Christopher. That's the ideology Reagan sought to bury for all time coming from the GOP. McClintock was the Reagan in the race.
