A priest from the Archdiocese of New York who`s accused of sexual abuse will have a secret church trial here in Erie. Monsignor Charles Kavanagh is accused of improperly touching a student in a sexual manner more than twenty years ago. The student was reportedly enrolled in a high school run by Kavanagh. Three to five Canon Law judges from the Catholic Diocese of Erie will hear the trial. The location will be determined by Bishop Donald Trautman. The proceeding was moved to Erie from New York to provide what the archdiocese there called "a more sedate environment."
Curious how the NY Daily News can publish the scandal but not the follow-up!
Please ping your lists. Thanks.
A more SEDATE environment????
ANY priest found guilty of this sort of crime should have the book thrown at them.
They have betrayed a sacred trust and severely let down God and His Church.
They are scum!
Touching here is not right, same for groping young boys and girls, but rape is far far more serious. Penetration must be severely punished, death is not too harsh especially for a multiple offender
The state isn't prosecuting?
You're right. Very different to child abuse.
This matter should be rightly dealt with internally by the Church and, if found innocent, he should be allowed to continue in his role.
However my view on child molesting priests stands. They are a blight on God's Church and all of Christianity.
The article title is very misleading. He is ALSO accused of sexual abuse? Maintaining innocence means nothing since no man who wants an affair covered up to admit it.
Aussie Dasher: Agreed on child molesters.
cyborg: Yes on the title being misleading. The only charge with which I am familiar for MSgr Cavanaugh is this one. He was known as a very orthodox priest; a frequent contributor to EWTN. Interesting that once these charges came out, his name completely disappeared from the EWTN library (even though he's done series for them).
Gitmo: The state has no need to prosecute as adultery is not a crime in NY.
Hmm this is very strange. He may well be innocent and I hope he does have a fair trial. However, the Church brought this on themselves by being secretive about it in the first place (not adultery but molestation). I know first hand about how 'upper management' covers things up. Even so, I'm still a Roman Catholic and hope that people focus on Jesus and the Blessed Virgin.
Monsignor Charles Kavanagh was with his secretary and fell prey to manly emotions. He's far superior to the boy diddlers. There's a gulf of difference
This is what is alleged, anyway.
As a Catholic of 70 years I am disgusted that these louts in the Hierarchy still intend to have their "Trials " in Secret.
These guys continue to maintain their "Mafia Style of Secret Justice" in spite of their reckless damage to the Church over the last 5 or 6 decades.
They are not capable of reforming the church from within.
I think you may be thinking of Monsignor Eugene Clark and Mrs. Defillipo, the unfireable $ 100,000 per year "Sacretary", wink, wink.
Can you imagine , I worried as a kid that if I ate a slice of Bologna on Friday I would be sent to hell for eternity.
That's what they taught me.
I think you mean Monsignor Eugene Clark, not Cavanaugh.
I live right near this parish and the Msgr. has a lot of support from his parishoners. For over a year they had signs outside the school in support of him. In this neighborhood to have that kind of support with these charges tends to make you believe this guy is a great guy.
I hope he gets a fair trial at least.
&$#*(#$&#$
You're right. I am sorry for the misstatement.
Where's the ((ooops)) key???
Beware!
Trautman (Pope Donald I of the Erian Catholic Church of Donald) is a 24kt AmChurch creep. He makes Mahoney look like Wojtyla.
A contributor to EWTN being tried within reach of Donald? Great.
