Has Citgo become a political tool for Hugo Chávez? By David J. Lynch, USA TODAY Thu Jan 12, 6:57 AM ET

From the glass-walled building and manicured lawn to the security guard who greets visitors in a cheerful Texas drawl, everything at Citgo Petroleum seems perfectly ordinary.

But in fact there's nothing ordinary about Citgo. One of the USA's largest refiners, Citgo is a subsidiary of Venezuela's state-owned oil company, Petroleos de Venezuela S.A. (PDVSA). As such, it ultimately belongs to Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez, an avowedly anti-American leader who counts Fidel Castro among his closest friends and mocks President Bush as a "genocidal murderer."

The question of Chávez's influence over Citgo was highlighted by the company's recent provision of 25 million gallons of subsidized home-heating oil to poor people in the northeast USA. More than 100,000 households in four states should eventually benefit from the low-cost heating aid.

I guess I don't understand what is going on with this in the USA. If Citgo becomes very anti-American, why not just boycott the stations? Venezuela will send the oil elsewhere, but it will be replaced by others. The USA could also just take over the refineries as a national emergency, if it will really affecting supply.

I say that folks should take advantage of any offer this wacko wants to give. Every gallon of discounted oil means that much less money that eventually gets back to his pocket.

If people become 'bought', I don't blame the person who offered the money, I blame the person who took it. But if someone is just handing out money, take it - odds are that if you don't, that someone will just use the money for worse purposes.

Selective nationalization of their assets in the USA? Followed by privatization to the highest bidder? ;-)

Chávez, an avowedly anti-American leader who counts Fidel Castro among his closest friends

Friends this article says? Chaves openly claims to be Castro's bastard child and Castro likes it that way. He is also courting the Red Chinese and is someone we'd best watch very closely and put a lid on.

Sounds a lot like the way cities are using eminent domain to steal private real estate, doesn't it?
