An Evergreen Story
On Saturday the Washington Redskins beat the Tampa Bay Buccaneers 17-10 in an NFL wild-card game, which means that this weekend the Redskins travel to Seattle to play the Seahawks, whose 13-3 record is the best in the National Football Conference. The Washington Post, a newspaper in the District of Columbia, reports that this is causing some trouble for a newspaper in Washington state:
To avoid insulting native American heritage, the Seattle Times decided to limit severely the use of the term Redskins in the paper--even if a team with that name will dominate news coverage this week. The Times will not use the moniker in headlines or captions. Reporters can use it only once, as a first reference, in all stories. The Redskins will be referred to almost exclusively as Washington--which could get a little confusing for local readers who also live in that state.

...and this has NOTHING to do with me living in Seattle....(which is an Indian name and I will post an additional Taranto item below)

What's Black and White and Red All Over?
Yesterday we noted that the Seattle Times was limiting references to the Washington Redskins in news articles about this weekend's playoff game between the You Know What Skins and the Seattle Seahawks. It seems that the District of Columbia team's name is offensive to the descendants of people whose ancestors lived in America before Columbus discovered it.
If the Seattle Times is serious about this policy, though, it will also have to stop using the first word in the Seattle Seahawks' name. True, it's a reference to the city, but the city is named after Chief Seattle, who was what, in less enlightened Times, was known as an Indian.
Come to think of it, the Seattle Times will have to stop using its own name for the same reason. But what name would be better? Just the Times is too confusing, since there are Timeses in New York, London and a few other places. Washington Times is taken, too.
Here's an idea: How about using an anagram? From now on, the Seattle Times will be known as Let's Eat Mites! OK, it's not exactly elegant, but it beats Talentless Piglet Erection.
ping-a-ding!!
BUMP
The Redskins should respond: no interview of Redskins players.
ROTFLMAO!!!
I've never liked the name "Redskins" - it just sounds bad you know?
I've heard of people wanting to get rid of names like "Indians" and "Chiefs" supposedly due to it's insulting nature. Thing is, if these names weren't featured these people would be just as mad (trying to sweep history under the rug are we?).
I take the position that teams who take an Indian name are fine...but "Redskins" has outlived its time.
Sheesh, who cares? How oversensitive can one be? Have a team called the crackers, see if I care.
How many dogs ya got sleepin' under that car jacked up on ceement blocks?
IM NOT WHITE IM "FLESH COLORED"!
Who can I sue?
hmmm...wouldn't have guessed this of you.
I'm not being militant on this...I don't think the Cleveland Indians or the Fighting Illini need to change a thing. Just think "redskins" is an outdated term.
Has it ever occurred to you in your elevated level of sensitivity, that we have a race in the nation at this time that prefers to be refered to as "Blacks"? Think real hard now... what do you think that was based on?
Blackskins, Redskins, Whites, who gives a rip. The name Redskins does reflect on our history. So what. I hope the Redskins win and use the event to make the fools who demean their team name look foolish to the full extent they can.
How will we have fun with the "Cowboys and Indians" thing if we change the name?
Redskins....Hail to 'em!
;-)
Just make certain that no descendant of Otto Graham is the quarterback of your postulated 'Cracker' team ...
(..bar-ump-bump..)...
8>)
Just call them the "Washington Churchills."
Huh? I got more conservative cred than you could ever dream about.
Even though I'm a resident of Washington State, I hope against hope that the 'Skins rip the beaks off the Seahawks.
