International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Jacques Rogge hopes that Africa will soon host the Olympic Games.
He said he was not surprised that the continent had never hosted the games as no Africa country had shown interest.
"To host the Olympic Games, one must first be a candidate and bid for them," he said.
The IOC boss was speaking at the United Nations High Commission for Refugees (UNHCR), where he donated sports equipment worth US US$50,000 towards the Kakuma refugee camp.
He said he hopes to see Africa hosting major events especially after South Africa won the bid to host the football World Cup in 2010.
Rogge also said he is happy that the bickering that has punctuated the bid for the 2012 Olympics Games had stopped.
1. Lacks the money to fund the Olympics
2. The people of Africa are dying of starvation and AIDS
3. Lack of transport facilities
4. Will have to build every stadium from scratch
5. Will have to build training facilities for 10 000+ athletes
6. Will have to build a Olympic village
7. Rising levels of crime
8. Will have to build accommodation for 100 000+ spectators and journalists
9. After the Olympics the stadiums will be left to rot
And this guy's in charge of something? Sell it short, boys, he's got no grasp of reality.
You beat me to it with bullet one. It takes boat loads of cash to even be considered for host country consideration. What is the net worth of the ENTIRE continent of Africa? Probably way less than the entire NorthEast or South of the USA.
I have no desire to visit any nations in which 25-50% of the adult population has AIDS. And I really would like to see South Africa at some point in my life...
Ah, you forgot to mention the aids factor.
Rapists would have more aids free people to rape.
Or used as mass execution/grave sites for the next genocide. Like they did in Sarajevo.
Old South Africa had the personnel, money, organisation and security to host. But sanctions/politics prevented this.
You forgot #10: They would expect America and Western Europe to pay for it.
Zimbabwe would be nice..........
That's what the Discovery Channel is for.........
1. Either South Africa or Libyia would be able to afford to put on an Olympics if they wanted to make it a priority.
2. Irrelevant.
3. South Africa has some excellent airports, and Libyia has a large former US airbase that it could adapt.
4. 5. & 6 What city hasn't had to build facilities from scratch.
7. Rising crime rates didn't hurt the Atlanta bid.
8. South Africa, no. Libya could develop a coastal tourism insdustry.
9. After the Olympics, Atlanta demolished a 50,000+ stadium and a 15,000+ arena. And last time I looked, some of the lesser venues weren't looking too hot.
Nigeria has a coast also and they have oil ($$$) as well. They could affort it.
Yes, and yes, but there is too much Muslim inspired unrest, and the central government doesn't have a firm grip on all of the country (recall the frequent attacks on the oil production facilities). Any any Nigerian efforts to put on the games would make what the Greeks did look well run. (Have the Greeks completed the Olympic facilities yet?)
Unless, of course, as I suspect, this [CENSORED] moron is suggesting that someone else, outside of Africa, fund the expense of all the preparation and construction of infrastructure.
And then perhaps, demand that others, outside of Africa, maintain the facilities forever.
I don't think that's going to happen...
Didnt the Chicoms donate a Stadium to an African nation, Not forgetting a new mansion to Robert Mugabe.
