I would say not completely, but it certainly undermined the thesis that he invented the Red Menace out of whole cloth. He simply went too far in how he went about his work and often went after people who were not guilty.

It's a shame we don't spend more effort on counterintel today. Al-Quaida figured out that the WTC could be taken out somehow.

Actually, Ann Coulter addressed that in her heavilly footnoted book, 'Treason', which while dogmatically opposed, was never discredited. More lies and negative spin, IMHO. According to 'Treason', it was the left who forced McCarthy to publicly name anyone. He always kept the names anonymous until pressured to go public by his critics.
