This morning, Senators will question Judge Alito during a third round. They will then go into a closed session, to review the FBI background investigation on the Supreme Court nominee. Outside witnesses may be called to testify this afternoon, as well as the American Bar Association, to discuss its recommendations.

There will be no fillibuster. Justice Alito will be seated shortly and based on his testimony, the proliferation of establishment and free exercise clause cases and some allies on the court I expect we'll be seeing the SCOTUS trying to make some sense of establishment clause jurisprudence and that is a good thing.

What McCain can do is what Perot did in 92. McCain can run as a moderate with a Dem moderate as a VP. He will suck up the "I can't vote for Allen but Hillary is worse" vote and Hillary will win the Presidency with 45% of the vote.
The left will then say she won by the largest margin ever and she has a mandate.
