Who Caused Alito's Wife to Cry?
Human Events Online ^ | 1/11/6 | Robert B. Bluey

Posted on 01/11/2006 7:24:25 PM PST by SmithL

A group cleverly called People for the Alito Way says the Associated Press wrongly characterized its an episode at Samuel Alito's hearing today that left his wife in tears.

The AP story, which followed an exclusive from the Drudge Report, placed the blame on a Republican senator rather than committee Democrats -- a fact the conservative group says is just plain wrong.

After taking a steady beating from Senate Democrats today, Sen. Lindsey Graham (R.-S.C.) offered an apology to Alito. (Read the full transcript.)

"Judge Alito, I am sorry that you've had to go through this," Graham said. "I am sorry that your family has had to sit here and listen to this."

Alito's wife, Martha-Ann Bomgardner, at this point had begun to choke up. She exited the hearing room and returned after a break holding her husband's hand.

But, according to the AP's account, it was a comment Graham made moments earlier that triggered Bomgardner's emotions.

"And really what I would look at to believe you're not -- and I'm going to be very honest with you -- is: How have you lived your life? Are you really a closet bigot?" Graham asked rhetorically.

The AP story reports:

"Martha-Ann Bomgardner, who had sat behind her husband for hours of questioning  over several days, left as her husband was being questioned by Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham of South Carolina.

"'Are you really a closet bigot?' Graham asked Alito. The nominee said no, and Graham said, "No sir, you’re not."

Commenting on the AP story, Coalition for a Fair Judiciary President Kay Daly said: “Mrs. Alito has shown grace under pressure after months of abuse at the hands of well-funded, left wing organizations and their Democratic minions on the Senate Judiciary Committee,” said Kay Daly. For the Associated Press to misrepresent these events in an attempt to smear Republican Senator Lindsey Graham sets a new low in the already subterranean level of journalistic standards on display in Judge Alito’s confirmation process.”

I am of a different type... and also from Assachoosyours (MA) I would have kicked over the table, (while screaming at my a@@hole Senator) and sniffed his water bottle for all the world to see.. I then would have grabbed his tie and bitch slapped him accross the face until he cried or I was arrested.. but hey... That's just me! P.S. If my hubby allowed me to attend, he would have had the smarts to put me in a fashionable strait jacket.. perhaps duct taping my mouth! -----

ROFL .............. my wife???

Even after Chappaquiddick, our wonderful "unbiased" press continued to promote Teddy K. for president!! for the 1972 elections until he made a fool of himself before Rgoer Mudd in a public tv interview. Contrast this with how they treated Richard Nixon who they would have whipped public hysteria against if he stubbed his big toe.

Aren't we all glad that it's not Harriet Miers up there?

Drunk Ted, Biden, and Schmuckie would be criticizing her bowling.

****

http://blogs.washingtonpost.com/campaignforthecourt/2005/10/a_good_bowler.html

Ask any of Harriet E. Miers's typically press-shy White House colleagues what she has been like in her years as a top Bush administration staff member, and the praise pours out. She is intelligent. Meticulous. Selfless. Insightful. But when it comes down to cases, they have a harder time.

"You know, she's a very gracious and funny person," said Joshua B. Bolten, the director of the Office of Management and Budget whom Ms. Miers succeeded as deputy White House chief of staff in 2003. "I was racking my brain trying to think of something specific.”

In the next breath, Mr. Bolten recalled relaxing with her at Camp David. "She is a very good bowler," he said. "For someone her size, she actually gets a lot of action out of the pins.”

Actually, I think that was Edwards. I was waiting for Cheney to jump out of his seat and strangle the Breck Girl. But he didn't. He used his entire rebuttal to thank Senator Edwards for the kind remarks about his family.

Thanks for the reminder. I so thoroughly enjoyed watching the debate between the VP and the Pretty Boy.

You are wrong to blame Graham. He has sometimes been on the wrong side, but he is with us on this judicial nomination matter and filibusters as well. He is not a RINO, and it makes me angry to have a friendly pro-Alito voice disparaged so.

Boy, did I ever get pummeled with my comment at #14. Having finally seen the entire video posted at MichelleMalkin.com , I have to agree with you and others, and apologize for my remarks. Graham DID do a good job and the "closet bigot" remark was at the start of a long series of remarks by Graham praising Alito. The remarks also had more than just the ring of truth with Graham saying that just the act of having a photo taken with someone who later turns out to be not as represented results in "guilt by association".

Rush Limbaugh was talking about the REAL organizations behind the Democrat Senators' lines of questioning. Sock puppets, indeed!

I saw a different hearing than you, but opinions differ, I suppose.

I think Graham was disgusted by the Dims and was doing the right thing.

Parody and sarcasm almost never work in situations like this. Graham has been around enough courtrooms to know this, because they don't work there either.
