AI to buy 68 Boeings, signs deal

India's flagship carrier Air India on Wednesday signed a landmark agreement with the American aerospace giant Boeing Commercial Airplane for the purchase of 68 aircraft at an estimated cost of Rs 35,000 crore (Rs 350 billion).
The agreement was signed between Air India chairman V Thulasidas and Boeing Commercial Airplane president and CEO Alan Mulally at the Air India office in south Mumbai.
Air India's order consists of 23 Boeing 777s and 27 Boeing 787-800 dream liners, AI sources said.
Air India Express, a wholly owned subsidiary of Air India will receive 18 Boeing 737-800s, it added.
The move follows the decision of empowered group of ministers to clear the Air India's proposal of aircraft purchase, the largest ever by an Indian carrier, after securing a financial discount of about Rs 1,000 crore (Rs 10 billion).

I forget, can the 787 fly from Delhi or Mumbai to New York or Los Angeles?
I'd love to go to India some day, but not necessarily via a European hub.

Well the plane has a United Airlines registration number. It's one of the 777's UA had to send back to the leasing company when they went into bankruptcy.
That it still has a US registration ("N")?

With those casinos on board, they should consider floating them off the Mississippi Gulf Coast until the buildings are rebuilt.

The "N" at the beginning signifies US registration. The "UA" at the end is for United Airlines. Southwest Airlines planes that were delivered to Southwest directly from Boeing have an "SW" at the end of their registration numbers.
I wish they had an equivalent dash-eighty flying first so they could prove the concept of a large plastic airplane before they committed the family farm on it.
The tail end looks like a missile defense system could be installed.

What do you think the military contracts were for? Why do you think Boeing bought McDonnell-Douglas? They have decades of experience with the performance of composites in military aircraft which are routinely put under much higher stresses than civilian aircraft.
I hope you're right. I want Boeing to succeed, partly because of national pride and partly because I'm an alum.
It's just that they are plowing some new territory, not only in structural, but aslo in systems (where I was involved when I worked there) that aren't proven to be up to the level of reliability necessary for commercial airplane use.
I think they are being wet-leased from UA to AI.
So what does this bring the 787 - A380 scorecard up to now?
