The level of Concern Color Code for Augustine Volcano is now ORANGE.
Over the past six hours, earthquake activity beneath Augustine has increased markedly. AVO considers this activity indicative of a heightened possibility of an explosive eruption within hours to days.
AVO is monitoring the situation closely and will issue further updates as new information and analyses become available. Onsite staffing at AVO has now expanded to 24 hour operations.

Current Level of Concern Color Code: YELLOW Previous Level of Concern Color Code: GREEN The Alaska Volcano Observatory (AVO) has detected a marked increase in earthquake activity beneath Mount Martin volcano. The increased earthquake activity began on January 8 and continues. The number of located events is roughly 300 in the last two days. This is in contrast to the background rate of about 25 earthquakes per month on average since the seismic network was installed in 1996. In response to these changes AVO is increasing the level of concern color code to YELLOW. Swarms of earthquakes of this nature are common at volcanoes such as Martin and do not suggest that eruptive activity is imminent. Satellite data show nothing unusual, although steaming is frequently observed at the volcano.
Martin volcano, interestingly, is in the Katmai group, but has never had a confirmed eruption in historical times; seems to produce large lava flows rather than explosive eruptions.

Does anybody know the stats for earthquakes associated with the volcano ..?? There's been lots of talk lately about an earthquake in that portion of the Pacific Rim, causing a major tsunami on the northwest coast.

Dang that is beautiful...
The earthquakes with each volcano are small and have absolutely nothing to do with subduction earthquakes offshore; the nearest subduction zone to these volcanoes is the one that produced the enormous Good Friday Alaska earthquake of 1964 (second largest ever recorded) and Tsunami, NOT the much-discussed suduction zone off Washington state and Oregon.
The zone of the 1964 earthquake wouldn't have had nearly enough time to reload for another large subduction quake and like I said, while in general these volcanoes are a result of the subducting slab melting, the earthquakes AT the volcanoes when they erupt have absolutely nothing to do with a large subduction quake offshore and aren't any sort of indication one would occur.

Sounds like that oil we've been needing will be coming to us.
It's interesting but in the grand scheme of things not THAT big deal; Augustine had substantial ash producing eruptions in 1976 and 1986 and I doubt anyone on FR outside of Alaska noticed. The volcanoes of Cook Inlet erupt a lot.
I really hope I don't see Apocalyptikooks and "Earth Changes" nuts taking this and running with it but I suspect they will any way.
This is just to much. Rove and the VP tell Bush that blacks are moving to Alaska, and now, just like New Orleans,the President calls his friends at big nature, and now volcanos.
Thank you - that's good to know. I have a niece in Tacoma and a niece in Coos Bay - and I would be devastated if anything happened to either one of them.
I use to run snowmachine from nabessna road back towards Mnt Sanford. Once you got in say 50 miles; hundreds of caribou, fresh wolf kills, and steam bath rocks as far as eye could see.
