WASHINGTON (CNN) -- Saying judges have been "intemperate or even abusive," Attorney General Alberto Gonzales on Tuesday ordered a review of immigration courts and insisted that they improve their treatment of immigrants.
Gonzales did not say what prompted his sharply worded memo. However, aides said internal information and media reports prompted the unusual admonition of employees.
"I have watched with concern the reports of immigration judges who fail to treat aliens appearing before them with appropriate respect and consideration, and who fail to produce the quality of work that I expect from employees of the Department of Justice," Gonzales wrote.
Justice Department officials say critical press reports were one of many factors that prompted the memo. A recent account in The New York Times quoted a federal appeals court ruling that claimed circuit judges continuously had to rebuke immigration judges for their "intemperate and humiliating remarks."
A federal appeals court in Chicago concluded in November that handling of immigration cases had "fallen below the minimum standards of legal justice."

I HOPE he's talking about LEGAL immigrants.
It's a little hard to treat with respect lawbreakers entering the country illegally, taking advantage of benefits originally created for residents and citizens and then blatantly break other laws and fill up the jails, public schools and hospitals....unless Gonzalez is talking about legal immigrants who are in trouble, I would agree with him there.
How much you wanna bet?
What can you expect from him, a supporter of illegal imigration.
I really hope you are right.
Illegals deserve to be treated for what they are - illegal immigrant criminals.
Something tells me though, this is not the case.
Losing faith? Nope. Not losing - it's gone already.

The article states "aliens"
Bush has appointed some real dorks - Gonzalez and the Secretary of Transportation, who is more concerned with profiling than airline safety.
The article states "aliens"
That's because in the minds of the OBL-ers that infest La Hacienda Blanco, there is NO difference between Illegal Infiltrators and "aliens"!
That is the problem!
"I have watched with concern the reports of immigration judges who fail to treat aliens appearing before them with appropriate respect and consideration, and who fail to produce the quality of work that I expect from employees of the Department of Justice," Gonzales wrote.
And the fawning sycophantic prostrating that this Administration does towards Mexico and the Narco-Terrorists that run it fall well below "the quality of work that I expect from employees of the Department of Justice" as well as from La Hacienda Blanco, Mr Gonzales!
Just what Country do they frickin WORK for?!?!
Judges should be professional and businesslike to everyone in front of them, regardless of status.
probably not.
I have no argument with the illegals themselves. Their attempts to enter the US are almost a natural law. My problem is with government policy that pushes all the taxpaid freebies on them and refuses to do anything significant to stop them. Employers who hire them should be jailed. Bureaucrats who give them services should be jailed. the border should be fortified. But judges should always have proper professional demeanor.
(sigh). Would a red carpet and a brass band be "nice" enough?
I agree with you but on the other hand I often review immigration cases coming down from the Ninth Circuit and the judges are often handed a load of hooey by some of these immigrants. Take, for example, the young man from China who disappeared in California for several years. He claimed he had a transit visa from Chile back to China and just happened to accidentally leave the international transit area for passengers. He claimed to be afraid to return through the doors and it was so convenient that his brother happened to live nearby and could pick him up and hide him. He has spent more than eight years fighting his case at taxpayer expense.
Or take the immigrant who claimed she had no idea that all those people smoking in the back of her car were doing it to cover the smell of drugs in the trunk.
Or the illegal parent who complained that sending her back to Mexico would be cruel because her children were born here and could not adapt to Mexican life.
The immigration courts are treated with disrespect by illegals who demand that the taxpayers fund years of appeals. I would not be surprised if some judges felt a bit cynical and express the same from time to time. Yes, judges are supposed to be high-minded and immune to getting peeved by parties but they are human and I don't believe a judge ever gets a fair shake from the press whose accounts sympathetic to the poor immigrant.

"It's a little hard to treat with respect lawbreakers entering the country illegally, taking advantage of benefits originally created for residents and citizens and then blatantly break other laws and fill up the jails, public schools and hospitals....unless Gonzalez is talking about legal immigrants who are in trouble, I would agree with him there."
Tell me about it. College classes are jammed to capacity by many immigrants who I swear to God shouldn't be here, jam-packing facilities and neighborhoods while living it up on our tax monies. Our healthcare workers are overworked and underpaid and the hospitals are crumbling from lack of funds. It's too much and sooner or later Bush is going to have to get his domestic policy in order or the Republicans are going to pay dearly next year's election, and the Presidential election. The last thing we need is HIllary in power, but it just might happen.

I agree with you there too. Furthermore, the people who hire them should be taxed the amount of money they save hiring illegals. If they save five hundred because of illegals, they should have that five hundred taxed.
" But judges should always have proper professional demeanor."
Yes, but at the same time it could be that judges are tired of playing nice.
The Guard on the border will work at best for a short time, and then the politicians like GWB and other Open-Border advocates will remove them. Only a twin 12 foot fence like Israel has will work...and it works.
