BATON ROUGE, La. - A Republican who says she has never worked on a political campaign filed documents Tuesday launching a drive to oust Gov. Kathleen Blanco, who was harshly criticized for her response to hurricanes Katrina and Rita.
Kat Landry, who filed a recall petition with state elections officials, said Louisiana needs new leadership to recover from the storms' back-to-back blows.
"What we have seen in the past few months is a lack of leadership, a lack of communication, a lack of understanding of how to get things done," Landry said.
In Louisiana, getting a recall on the ballot requires petition signatures from at least one-third of the state's registered voters, or about 900,000 people, in 180 days, according to Jennifer Marusak of the secretary of state's office.
The 180-day period for gathering signatures began Tuesday, when the petition was filed, Marusak said.
If the proper signatures are gathered, a majority of voters in a recall election would have to vote to get rid of Blanco, a Democrat, before she would be forced out of office.
Blanco was out of the country Tuesday, studying flood-control measures in Holland, and unavailable to comment. A spokesman of hers would not comment on the petition.
Landry said she's received a tremendous amount of traffic on a recall Web site she set up, and noted 676,000 people voted against Blanco for governor in the first place. Blanco was elected in 2003 with 52 percent of the vote; the number cited by Landry was the total who voted for her opponent, Bobby Jindal.
A call to the state Republican Party for comment on whether it was involved in the petition drive was not immediately returned.
Apart from detesting Blanco's stupidity and her wanton blaming of President Bush and everyone else for her stupidity, I don't really have a dog in this hunt.
That said, I don't see much changing no matter who succeeds Blanco if the population is going to keep letting its Democrat-dominated legislature get away with murder.

Start withdrawing your objections. Per the recall provisions of July 15, 2005, the State of Louisiana holds a Recall Election followed by a separate Special Election for successor of the recalled position.

You're right. This is far from my area of knowledge or expertise, but if it can be done we need to do it.
I don't know and it is a bad idea. Recall madness is the wrong fork in the road to take. It is bad public policy. The event should be rare.

§14. Vacancy in Office of Governor
Section 14. When a vacancy occurs in the office of governor, the order of succession shall be (1) the elected lieutenant governor, (2) the elected secretary of state, (3) the elected attorney general, (4) the elected treasurer, (5) the presiding officer of the Senate, (6) the presiding officer of the House of Representatives, and then (7) as provided by law. The successor shall serve the remainder of the term for which the governor was elected.
§1300.13. Declaration of vacancy
When the majority is in favor of the recall, the public officer is, ipso facto, recalled and removed from office, and the office shall be vacated upon receipt by the secretary of state of certified returns from all of the parish boards of election supervisors within the jurisdiction, and the office shall be filled as in the case of ordinary vacancies and according to the constitution and laws of the state. A public officer who has been recalled and removed from office shall not be appointed to succeed himself in the office from which he was recalled and removed.

Not sure if any of the amendments change any of the above outcome.....
I'm only for recall in the instance of an individual's gross misconduct or gross incompetence. Blanco, of course, makes Gray Davis look like Reagan in the competency department.

With elections in New Orleans suspended indefinitely the Governess will claim that its impossible to hold statewide recall elections.

I agree, I don't like recalls. Elections should mean something. Voters should think about how they'll be stuck with that candidate for 4 years before they pull the lever.
And if DJ is correct and Mitch Landrieu would accede to the governorship of LA, that's another reason to oppose the recall.
(While I was rooting for Gray Davis's removal after the CA recall got enough signatures to get on the ballot, I still said throughout the process that I wished for the legislature in CA and other states to propose constitutional amendments to eliminate recall provisions from the state constitution.
