Auds on a 'Mountain' high: 'Brokeback' beats out 'Bloodrayne,' 'Casanova'
Variety ^ | January 8, 2006 | Ben Fritz

Nothing is standing in the way of "Brokeback Mountain."

Expanding to 214 new playdates and more than 60 new markets, including numerous small cities in mountain, Midwestern, and southern states, Focus' cowboy love story averaged a still-strong $11,905 per theater.

Playing at 483 locations, weekend gross was $5.8 million, bringing the pic's cume to $22.5 million.

"Brokeback" came out ahead of several new pics on twice or four times as many playdates, including "Casanova," "Bloodrayne" and "Grandma's Boy."

Among the new markets where the critically acclaimed pic opened strong were Tulsa, El Paso, Des Moines and Lubbock, Tex.

Pic, which has been nominated for every major award thus far, also experienced its first flash of controversy as the Jordan Commons theater in suburban Salt Lake City reneged on a contract with Focus to play the pic. More information on reasons weren't available, though it appears to be over the film's same-sex romance.

With cities of every size in nearly every location doing well with "Brokeback," the next challenge is expanding further into the suburbs. Pic will likely expand to around 600 playdates by Friday and closer to 800 by Jan. 20.

"The film is maintaining its rock-solid consistency, and I think suburban markets are now ready for it," said Focus distribdistrib toppertopper Jack Foley.

***In another development, The California Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association has announced a new rodeo event. In addition to Bareback, Saddle Bronc and Bull Riding, cowboys will also compete in Rump Riding....***

About 20 years ago one of my co-workers obtained a copy of the LA Times. In it was an article about a "Gay rodeo" in town. We razzed several of our rodeo enthusiasts unmercifully about it.

In fact, I read that it is NOT showing in Utah..the headline implies that the owners stopped the showing, but further reading shows that the distributor is the one who pulled it....because they ONLY want to show it in areas it will do well..then hope that word-or-mouth will sell it..
It's a good marketing plan obviously, but still don't think it will sell in the numbers they want.

'Author Annie Proulx says she got the idea for her short story — which led to the movie — in a Wyoming bar when she saw one cowboy watching a bunch of other cowboys play pool instead of looking at the pretty girls.'

Waaaiiit a minute......Did this big 'gay cowpoke' fiasco happen just because some cowboy wouldn't hit on her at a bar? Dang.

That is a shame too since I have heard that the Butt Boil Lancing movie is a classic.

1.51% of the population is GLBT according to The National Health and Social Life Survey. This figure is also consistent with that from the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago.

Hey, Cowboy, who put the burr under your saddle! If you feel you must defend the movie, I applaud you courage in the choice of this particular forum. No, I have not seen it, read the short story on which it is based, nor have I gone into glorious spasms at an attempt to mainline conduct that I find personally reprehensible. Intense interpersonal relationships between males does not interest me be they cowboys, sheepmen or interior decorators. Since you obviously have a different view, I apologize for having disturbed your peace. By the way, there is an indie Canadian picture out that depicts the glorious relationship between an English teacher and his thirteen-year-old male student. I can't remember the title, but I'm sure you'll find your way to it.

Ledger in the Sydney Herald recently:

"Ledger said he was not surprised a Utah cinema had banned Brokeback Mountain, which depicts a lifelong love affair between two Montana cowboys.

"I heard a while ago that West Virginia was going to ban it. But that's a state that was lynching people only 25 years ago, so that's to be expected," Ledger said.

"Personally, I don't think the movie is (controversial) but I think maybe the Mormons in Utah do. I think it's hilarious and very immature of a society"

2 million doesn't sound like very many people. Most of them are homosexual, presumably.

I was simply pointing out that one of the many FR talking points is, in fact, incorrect. If you want to keep repeating inaccurate statements, that's your issue.

It is a very well-made movie. I see many movies that feature - even glorify - behavior I deem reprehensible, like murder, extortion, cheating, corruption, etc. That doesn't have anything to do with whether the craft is well-executed, or not.

I also like bluegrass. It is a common form in bluegrass to have songs involving killing in a jealous rage. Don't mean they ain't good songs.

They's Cowpokes! They're somethingPokes. But I wouldn't call it cows, perhaps it's was a "Bum" steer.

Anyway, enough time spent beefing about these Riders of the Lavender ...um... yeah, nevermind.

I'm just glad John Wayne isn't around to see what has become of the classic American icon of "The Cowboy". I guess it's going to be cow-bois from now on...

Sad.

This is total hearsay, but there was a post on FR the other day. Someone said that during Michael Medvid someone called in, and said they were told that an empty "Brokeback" theatre was "sold out".

Freepers were skeptical of the claim. I can tell you my sister, who is a flaming liberal, probably went to see it and weep over the "love story". I expect gays to see it 10 times - sort of a "Passion" for the deviant.
