NUCLEAR IRAN
National Review ^ | 1/10/2006 | Stanley Kurtz

Posted on 01/10/2006 10:15:10 AM PST by Rutles4Ever

So Iran has broken the seals on its nuclear reactor and gotten back to work. Now have a look at James Robbins’ “Let Iran Go Nuclear?” I don’t think it’s coincidence that Iran has taken this action at a moment when Israel is in relative paralysis. Rumors of a strike against Iran’s nuclear facilities have been circulating in Israel for some time. But the Israelis cannot act without American support.

We are at war. We are not losing the war, but if Iran goes nuclear we will be. Iran is acting because it knows that Europe is weak, and because it sees the United States as paralyzed by domestic opposition to the war. During the presidential campaign, the Democrats wanted to offer Iran a “grand bargain:” we’ll give you nuclear facilities if you send us the spent fuel for safe-keeping. It’s obvious now (as it should have been then) that such a bargain is hopeless. Iran wants the bomb, and nothing but a military strike will deter it. Read that piece by Robbins and you’ll see what’s at stake. Reflecting on the question of a military strike, it seems that the main argument against it is political: Dovish Europeans, the America’s Democratic Party, and Middle Eastern countries will be angry at us for resorting to military means. This strikes me as a bad reason to hold back. The doves will be discredited when we see what comes of a nuclear Iran. But by then it will be too late.

Agreed, but my bet is on Israel and a pre-emptive attack before March.

Good thing we've got a fresh military with no prior committments ready to roll on Iran.

Thanks Doper! By god you are right, the 1/5th of the US Military involved in Iraq sure makes it impossible for the other 4/5ths to do anything anywhere ever. So glad you reminded us of that!!!

What we have is a battle hardened military with lots of big toys that haven't been taken out of the box yet. If we have to destroy any enemy on the face of the Earth.....we can.

The US is NOT going to allow Iran to develop the bomb. Everyone except Iran knows this including the Russians. We still have approximately 12 months before we have to act, but I suspect no later than the end of this summer we will see B-1s and other bombers wiping their nuclear sites off the face of the earth.

There are reasonable men in Iran, as everywhere. Their current president is a strange dude but the rhetoric is empty. Any resemblance to the Hitler stereotype is superficial: they are not in the same league with Nazi Germany.

Wow. I took your advice and checked out BBC.com

My sympathy for the decline of Europe grows less and less with each passing day. We're not far behind, in some quarters.

You're nuts. How's that for empty rhetoric. Goes nicely with your empty assertions. :^)

Thanks for your concern, but why resort to fallacious argument right off the bat?

Please everyone post to the BBC site with your views. What I wrote:

The mullahs who currently control Iran have loudly boasted that they will rain atomic fire on Israel the first chance they get. They care nothing for the lives of their own citizens and are quite willing to commit nuclear genocide. The fact of mutually assured destruction will not deter them - they are fanatics willing to martyr their own country and anyone downwind of them.

I'm fine with Iran going nuclear:

IRAN: Flat, black, and glows in the dark

"Iran would not dare actually use their nukes."

I run a marketing business. When I talk to new clients or vendors, they state their intentions for short term and long-term goals. It's called an agenda. Now during the time we actually do business, many people try to be sly to package 'benefits' of how they want to now do business. But all that is really needed to get or turn away business is the intentions. Iran's stated intentions are to destroy Israel. The USA they hate but their real intentions are to build the bomb and use it on Israel. We cannot allow this event to happen period and neither can Israel.
