GREEN BAY, WI - A sharp increase in the number of people who killed themselves in Brown County last year has some community leaders concerned.
The county's medical examiner ruled 36 deaths as suicides last year, a 64 percent increase over 2004 and a 38 percent increase over the 10-year average.
The jump has Interim Brown County Medical Examiner Al Klimek asking himself why.
"You ask, 'What's going on in our community that is making people end their lives? Is it socioeconomic changes? Is it health reasons? Is it ... the doomsday reporting that we have every day, everything is bad, everything is going to be bad and it's never going to get better?' I guess I don't have the answer to that, but I certainly am concerned about that significant of an increase in one year," he said.
Laurie Resch, director of Crisis Center in Green Bay, knew last year was a bad one for suicides. She's not sure how else her agency can help.
"We're about as good as it gets for a crisis center, to be perfectly frank without blowing our own horn," Resch said. "Many crisis centers in the nation are only hotline services. We are not only the telephone, the hotline service, but we see clients face-to-face, and not only do we see them face-to- face, but we see them 24 hours a day, seven days a week."
I think the thought of them retaining Favre after this year's performance may be the cause.
Must be a hangover effect from November 2004.
Or it could be that the DOW hit 11,000 today, thereby bringing great credit to the Bush Administration.
Either way, the Dims can keep killing themselves as far as I am concerned.
My first thought as well. Bad Packers season.
It's the newspaper articles reporting them. Ask anybody who's ever worked at a newspaper in a college town.
One happens, it gets reported, and you end up with a small cluster of them fairly quickly, as at any given time a portion of the population is depressed, and a subset there of is SERIOUSLY depressed.
The reporting just reinforces those feelings.
Good point. I wonder what the statistics would be on party affiliation. Democrats believe that in every way imaginable things have never been worse.
..*Shruggs*...maybe it's the NYT'S ...maybe it's the DOW going over 11,000 today....maybe the cheesehead hats are too tight, maybe this quack miscounted?
Doogle
They received their property tax bills.
It's called .... W-I-N-T-E-R. People in the colder climates have a high suicide rate during the winter months. Everything looks dead outside their windows and it is very depressing to more than a few.
"They received their property tax bills."
LOL! Good one. :)
You've probably got something there. I get a little squirrely up here in the winter, though I don't suffer any symptoms of depression. Hard to believe the doctor (coroner) or the suicide hotline lady wouldn't make that connection! Especially the suicide lady. Maybe she's not very good after all? *Rolleyes*
The sun hadn't been out for 14 days straight until yesterday. I spent most of the day outside chopping, hauling and stacking firewood, just to have something to do outside!
Maybe the Pharmaceutical Companies have reached their State's physicians and everybody's on meds?
We hit 11,000 today? Yee-haw!
Yes, for the first time since June 2001.
It is amazing how strong our economy is right now, and I can only hope and pray that God continues to bless us.
Now, here in beautiful sunny Florida (having a cold snap, high today only 72 hahaha) you can do anything you want during the winter months.
Bor-ing! I lived in San Diego for a few years, and that "Sunny and 72" every day got old fast. I love living a 'Four Seasons' life. I'm one of those Earth Mother types. ;)
My Dad is in Key West right now. The old f@rt ran off and got married again at age 69. Fool. ;)
What does this have to do with Brokeback Mountain?
`Bad "Packers" season!!!?'
Go back to Chicago and duh Bears! See who wins!
I'll bet everyone of them will get to vote in 06 and 08.
