Potential GOP challenger criticizes Clinton on spying complaints

ALBANY, N.Y. (AP) _ A potential Republican challenger took Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton to task Monday for complaining in a fundraising letter about the Bush administration's policy of monitoring some domestic communications without court approval.

``Senator Clinton has repeatedly said that the greatest responsibility she bears is the protection of American lives from terrorist attack,'' said former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer. ``But now, in a blatant political move, Senator Clinton is politicizing national security to raise campaign money.''

Clinton campaign spokeswoman Ann Lewis declined to comment on the Spencer complaint.

At issue is a late-December fundraising appeal in which the former first lady pledged to ``keep speaking out about my disagreements with this administration and their congressional allies'' and criticized ``a secret program that spies on Americans!''

``The values that made America in the 20th century not just the economic leader of the world, but the moral leader of the world are under attack today,'' Clinton wrote.

The Bush administration has come under fire from Democrats and some Republicans for its monitoring of domestic communications, in the wake of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, without obtaining warrants from a special court that deals with such issues. Bush has said the warrantless monitoring policy does not violate the law and is important to protecting the country from terrorists.

``It's sad when the senator who represents ground zero appeals to paranoia to raise money by accusing the president of spying on Americans,'' said Spencer.

``It's incredible that Senator Clinton would attack the National Security Agency program that protected New York,'' the Republican added.

Spencer, a Vietnam War veteran who is little known statewide, has become the front-runner for the GOP Senate nomination in the wake of Jeanine Pirro's December decision to end her struggling Senate campaign.. ""

He should add, "how can she complain about wire tapping without a warrant when she said nothing when her husband approved physical searches of Americans homes without warrants." "What is more private your home or your telephone?"

former Yonkers Mayor John Spencer.

Whenever I read a story about former Yonkers mayor John Spencer, I think of Cornelius Hackl in "Hello Dolly" proclaiming, "We're from Yonkers!"

It doesn't matter. Any Republican Senate candidate in New York state will lose. At least Spencer has the guts to pillory Hillary!, hopefully derailing any 2008 Presidential run. I'm not sure you could say the same for the RINOs Pataki would put up against her.

It should be liberating to run a statewide campaign for senate with the expectation that you're going to lose. You don't have to worry about currying favor with the media, but can hit hard and hit often at the opposition, which I hope Spencer does. Of course, Hillary and her lapdogs in the media will call Spencer's efforts a "smear campaign; the dirtiest campaign in US history."
