N.Y. Times Editor-Reporter Dies After Attack in NW

David E. Rosenbaum, a longtime editor and reporter in the Washington bureau of the New York Times, died yesterday after being beaten and robbed Friday night near his home in upper Northwest Washington.

Rosenbaum, 63, died at 7:10 p.m. at Howard University Hospital, where he was treated for a head injury suffered during the attack on Gramercy Street NW, said Philip Taubman, chief of the Times's Washington bureau

Doctors had operated on Rosenbaum on Saturday to relieve pressure on his brain.

D.C. police were canvassing the neighborhood yesterday for clues in the attack, which occurred in a quiet section between Connecticut and Wisconsin avenues. No arrests had been made.

No doubt it is poverty, hopelessness and taxation without political respresentation that has made them hate us. I propose immediate statehood for DC, a commuter tax, more federal dollars for midnight basketball and free breakfast lunch and dinner for every DC child.

I used to live in DC. Thats a very nice neighborhood that happened in. As far from the thugs and criminals as you can get. I'm very surprised something like that happened there.

I appreciate that you all need to get in a politcal zinger (re: gun control, DC violence, NYT liberalism, etc.). Let's not forget that a man died here, apparently at the hands of common thugs. He was a father and a grandfather as many of us are. I think a little more care and respect would be in order.

I agree with you. What happened is tragic. The man was probably a liberal, but in the grand scheme of things that doesn't matter that much. There are plenty of good people who are misguided, and plenty of bad people who have the right ideology. One of the sad things about the divisive state of this country is the tendency of both sides to just treat the other side like their pure evil and not engage in an honest and open debate. I don't remember it being that divisive twenty years ago. At least people were reasonable then.
