The shock was who *he* was, not what he did.

No more "sad" than the deprived and abusive childhood of your average serial killer.
The man betrayed his oath, his constituents, and his solemn duty to his country for the sake of a few bucks, and what he did in his youth can't wash away that stain.
Perhaps if he'd thought back to the code of honor of the US Armed Forces - assuming it ever meant anything to him in the first place - he wouldn't have committed these crimes.

" wonder if he wore this wire to any classified discussions or meetings? " Thinking about that myself.

If Cunningham was wired up, then it's quite possible that Abramoff was also wired up at some point. Now, if I was a congresscritter with a corrupt bent, and, if I had talked to either one of them since the summer, I would be sweating bullets.

So this Congressman was indicted for taking bribes, and then was bribed by the Feds in order to parlay a reduced sentence..I guess that's how it works now.

The only way it'd be better news is if he went after RINOs first. You won't find any of the traditional rinos guilty of corruption because the rinos are not playing ball with the leadership.

MZM and Wade also contributed to the campaigns of Rocky and Murtha so the Dems should be careful before assuming that Defense Contractors and Republicans always go hand in hand.

The sad part is that Prisoner Cunningham was not well liked in Democrat circles, meaning that those who spoke into his lapel button were probably Republicans. Not to say that the guilty bastards don't deserve to have the book thrown at them.

The old "what have you done for me recently" deal. What he did and the arrogance of the way he did it really pisses me off; now this. Looks like he is still trying to avoid cell time.

Lt. Cunningham was no more a hero as a member of the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club than the rest of the Carrier Jocks that night after night did their thing in route Packages 6 Alfa And Bravo.
He just happened to be a Phantom Driver who was in the right place at the right time. Billy Phillips could fly rings around Cunningham, one handed.
Adm. Moorer and Commodore Swede Vetejeh implemented Top Gun at Miramar -- not because of Cunningham's successes, but because we were so lacking in the sustained practice of close-in air combat. (I know this personally.)
If you want to talk about heroes, speak of Jerry Denton and Jim Stockdale, not this "dumber than a brick" pimp, who despoiled the Naval Service by his unconscionable acts.
Toss Cunningham's wife into the garbage can as well. She failed the test -- as a sordid accomplice. Pox on their house!

She would work in cahoots with evert RINO in Washinton and put a wire on them The rinos are independent thinkers. They won't play ball with Hillary or Delay. They like to be nice people are are probably the least corrupt in Washington.
The rinos are ladies and gentlemen who are somewhat ill suited for the current state of smash mouth politics. But this is also why they are probably the most ethical bunch in Washington.

It is good that cunningham did not get captured. From his character, it looks like he would have given up any and all information on anything.

Don't know 'bout that. A google on Cunningham's cosponsor record shows he was quite active with the Dems. Also the defense contractor MZM mentioned in some articles also heavily supported John Murtha.

I have a theory. The wire trapped nobody and the investigators are releasing this in the hopes that a nervous Congressman or two will come forward.
To: Atchafalaya
what will be damaging is the "locker room talk" that may have been recorded and the braggadocio may not even be true.
for example,
Cunningham: "hey buddy, I hear you scored big time with that inside stock tip"
witless victim who agrees to be polite and not look like a wimp : "sure did, going to buy me a big boat too."

I think people change. I think too many years in power played a big part in that. Was the man in that F-4 the same person as the one taking the bribes?
Only he can answer that one.
