WASHINGTON Embattled Rep. Tom DeLay on Saturday abandoned his bid to remain as House majority leader, clearing the way for leadership elections among Republicans eager to shed the taint of scandal.
In a letter to rank-and-file Republicans, DeLay said, "During my time in Congress, I have always acted in an ethical manner within the rules of our body and the laws of our land. I am fully confident time will bear this out."
At the same time, "I cannot allow our adversaries to divide and distract our attention," the Texas Republican wrote.
DeLay is battling campaign finance charges in Texas and was forced to step aside temporarily as majority leader last fall after he was charged in his home state. He has been trying to clear his name and, until Saturday, resume his leadership role.

Now, now.
You know very well if it had been a *Democrat* in this position, they'd have done the exact same thing for the good of the country.
/dripping sarcasm
:)
I wish DeLay had stuck it out.
Seems that with all the retirees running around, getting Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and clogging the roads leading to Wal-Mart, (myself included) that a few, in each voting district in the entire USA, could get together and investigate their representatives until they found some incriminating evidence of criminal wrongdoing, present it to the local prosecutor and begin to remove all these corrupt officials.
Who wants to start a web site devoted to Prosecuting And Removing Criminal Politicians?

I think there's already such a system in place. It's called checks and balances. That means that everybody in Washington has dirt on everybody else. In this case, the DeLay dirt pile started to tip the scales a bit. No biggie.
Thanks for the Sunday laugh.

I hope you got my sarcasm.
That I did. ;)

Then why has he been censured by the ethics committee on a couple of occasions? I don't know if DeLay did anything criminal but his own party has shown this statement to be false.
Any man who can get in front of the media and claim that the Republican Party has already cut government as much as it can is not the man, or woman, I want leading the GOP in the House.
Well hey... he was one of the VERY FEW Republicans with balls.
I mean he would actually knock heads together and GET THINGS DONE (remember... 'the hammer'?), and he was loyal to the president, and EVERYONE (even his enemies) lamented his 'effectiveness'.
Then again, the dems are saying lots of mean things about him. Earle has that "BIG" locktight indictment out there. And the MSM has been harping on him alot lately...
So yeah... its probably better to just sell him out and give the democrats what they want. Then they will be happy and not go after anyone else, and probably work with us on a bunch of things once they find out we are reasonable.
This should set an insteresting template... (bangs head on wall)
Beacuse before the Republicans got into power the Democrats used the Ethics committee as a weapon against their enemies.
Remember how many times ethics charges were brought against Newt Gingrich? In excess of 34 times! Mostly by that half a**ed Commie from Michigan, David Bonior.
All but one were thrown out and the one that stuck was on the order of littering.
Nice theory except that all these censures have come since the GOP took over the house. And the ethics committee has an equal number of Republicans and Democrats. The only way that they can censure DeLay is if the GOP members agree.
