SACRAMENTO, Calif. - Activist Cindy Sheehan told supporters at a peace forum Saturday that troops would get out of Iraq if millions of U.S. citizens took the simple step that she did outside President Bush's vacation home last summer.
"Anybody could do what we did in Crawford, Texas. We just went down and sat down," Sheehan told the crowd of several hundred people, with Academy Award-winning actor Sean Penn in the front row.
She urged them to loose their apathy and do something. "We have to get so freakin' fed up with what's going on that we all go and sit down," Sheehan said.
Sheehan, a Berekley resident whose 24-year-old soldier son died in Iraq, attracted hundreds of anti-war protesters to her makeshift camp near Bush's ranch in August.
"These people, they're not going to change unless they see us out in the streets," she said at the forum that organizers said was among dozens of town hall-style events held across the nation.
Penn, an early opponent of the war who drew criticism for his visit to Iraq, said he is buoyed by recent efforts in Congress to rein in the president's powers and bring troops home, and by the outraged response to disclosures that the government had wiretapped without obtaining warrants.
"When we said, 'Listen to us' they're doing it through covert surveillance," Penn joked. He read his brief remarks from a single crumpled piece of paper and said it "probably looks like the administration's war plan."
Deborah Johns of nearby Roseville, who heads Northern California Marine Moms, said most people support the troops in Iraq. However, she said the president and news media have done a poor job showing the troops' progress.
Johns led Sheehan opponents on a 21-state caravan to Bush's ranch last fall.
"I saw thousands of people who came out to thank our men and women," Johns said in a phone interview Saturday. "I don't think that sort of grass-roots effort is out there that Cindy Sheehan would like people to believe. It's a fantasy."

Can someone include the rest of Cindy's sign? It should read "In memory of my son, who chose to join the military and re-enlist while in Iraq and who obviously didn't share my perspective." Thanks.

Sean knows jokes, he is one.
White courtesy phone, Sean , it's Osama.
Thanks.
It says volumes for how much she respects here son's belief in voluntarily serving his country and sacrificing his life to rescue some of his own fellow soldiers in peril and losing his own life in so doing.
For that, she twists his death to serve the very enemies he died fighting.
It seems that a reporter should know the difference between 'loose' and 'lose'. Even one from AP.
This woman is starving for attention. It started to ebb after Augeust, and now she's getting her second shot at the headlines, for some reason--probably because the MSM are desperate since katrina, wiretapping and Abramoff aren't destroying the Bush administration. She's being used, but I think she's aware of that and participating in that.
But when the MSM moves on again, she's going to be more pathetic than Al Franken at a singles bar.
It just happened that Cindy Sheehan was laying down in her son cemetery when the Vanity Fair photographer was passing by and he noticed her and took this picture. This picture is so natural of a "grieving" mother and it is a photo-op whatsoever (extreme sarcasm).
I was a bit reluctant to post this article as I know some feel it just gives her face time and that if no one pays any attention, she will just go away.
Then , I thought about her family and how they may need to do something drastic to help her ,, in effect, have her declared mentally incompetent and have her institutionalized for evaluation and counseling.
She was a useful tool for awhile to the left but that time has passed. She needs help. It is the compassionate thing to do.
If katrina, wiretapping and Abramoff can't destroy the Bush administration, I fail to see how this pathetic attention-starved whore can make any difference to the American citizens or Congresscritters. I think that is why she is traveling primarily outside the US these days - we will no longer pay attention. She does not fit into the Impeach Bush and Cheney and Impeach and Demand Censure for Bush-Cheney Misconduct equation - she will have no impact and the RATs will abandon her. Then we can feel sorry for her, but as long as the camera is in front of her she gets "no sorry" from this guy.
Hey Cindy...JUMP!
Sheehan & Spicoli... a perfect match.
Aside from what I already know of her, that's all I need to know ... LOL.
I've been thinking long and hard on Cindy...a waste of time really...and though I know she is mentally ill, I think its time to take her to the next level. So I'd like to suggest a tactic to bring her down. At every demonstration that she is engaged in...have two guys dressed in black suits...at ends of a coffin (I know its going to sound morbid)...and a little sign on the side of this coffin. The sign will simply say..."The dead cannot rest whilst fools tread upon their grave". Thats it. Nothing else. I won't even refer to Casey...it would be totally in disrepect if I did.
I think this tactic...if you started dragging the two guys out and the coffin...would start to be seen by the national media, and pose a very serious question which might be subliminal in nature. People would sit there after the news and ask themselves what that really means...and connect the dots back to Cindy. Eventually, Cindy would be unnerved by the two guys whenever they showed up. And we might have to have a Harley group provide physical escort for the two pallbearers.
I think you're right. For awhile now I have been thinking that when the spotlight turns away from her she will do something drastic to get it back, like climb the wall at the White House or something. She's a nutcase--I can't be any more blunt than that.
I think they will let her prattle on in the background, but by the time the election rolls around she will be seen as a creepy presence rather than a help, and the Dems will wish she'd go away. But since she's critical of HRC for her stand on the war, she will be a useful idiot for some time. "How can you say liberals are soft on terror when Cindy Sheehan denounces Hillary Clinton wherever she goes."
"Listen...I can hear him spinning."
