In sharp contrast to yesterday, when the 4.9% unemployment rate was described by the MSM as "weak numbers", the media was tripping over itself in 1996 while reporting the 5.6% unemployment under President Clinton in 1996 as evidence of a rosy economy and good policies by the administration. Below is how the Post described the news. Notice that it buried the weaker than expected payroll growth deep in the report, while yesterday it lead most of the major newscasts, which downplayed the unemployment numbers.
********************************************************
The unemployment rate dropped to 5.4 percent, its lowest level in 14 months, the government reported yesterday, capping a week of good economic news for the country -- and great news for President Clinton's reelection bid. Wages are rising at their fastest pace in five years, consumer confidence is soaring, and business and consumer spending has fueled an unexpectedly strong burst of economic growth.
This rosy outlook could rob Senate Majority Leader Robert J. Dole (R-Kan.), Clinton's likely Republican rival for the presidency, of a critical campaign issue.

Moreover, only 2,000 jobs were added to employers' payrolls last month while those in construction and manufacturing combined fell by 70,000.
Usually such a tiny gain in payrolls might have raised fears that economic growth was faltering. But in this case, payrolls had gone up an average of 221,000 a month in the first quarter, and a number of analysts said last month's flat number only lessened their concern that the economy might be growing so fast that inflation would worsen.

This is a great catch. Thanks for sharing.
It's funny that the old MSM doesn't know the average Joe out there can look up what they have said in the past and indict them for bias while they sit around and deny it.
See how back then they were touting the employment rate which they always did before Bush became President. Now a days they report the actual number of jobs.
If a report came out yesterday and Bush took credit for 2,000 net jobs being created in December, the media would have proclaimed the begining of the next depression.
Payrolls increased by 2,000? Bush would have been flayed alive and burned at the stake for those numbers. As it is, after the economy added over 100,000 jobs last month he was only flayed.
The MSM is a pathetic bunch. This is just more evidence as to why they're held in such low opinion and ridiculed.
Their agenda and bias is so apparent.

Another perfect illustration of hypocrisy in the media!
Great catch. e-mail this to Hannity.
pinging self. this is a keeper.
Worst Economy Ever ..It's Bush's Fault BUMP
The heck with sending it to Hannity, send it to the WP and demand an explanation.
media bias bump
The WP and their liberal brethern in the MSM always portray the glass as being half empty whenever they are forced to report on news that is favorable for Republicans. The MSM is nothing more than an echo chamber for the Dems.
Excellent detective work! Ya did good, real good.
I look forward to that happy day when the Washington Compost and the New York Slimes cease publication due to collapsing circulation.
Who in their right mind can tolerate these lying propaganda rags?
anyone have a link to the Compost story from yesterday

I had the pleasure of sending back a form that the NYSlimes sent asking me to subscribe to their trash paper. I wrote that their "News"paper isn't fit for the bottom of my birdcage and returned it to them in their postage paid envelope. Noticed they are pushing hard for new subscribers with TV ads and mass mailings.
It's NOT going to help them.
