I know there have been a lot of threads about this, but I haven't heard this angle. I don't watch TV, but poked my head in for the sports segment of the news...and when a commercial came on, it was a preview for "BrokeBack Mountain".
Now, I know that previews often don't tell you much about a movie, but this one really took the cake. If you watched this preview, you saw: Beautiful country, nice sunsets, handsome men on horses, good looking women with men kissing them in a bed, etc. There was NOTHING that might indicate to you the controversial nature of the movie. I thought it was intentionally misleading, the way it was constructed.
I realized, the people who are hyping this movie (and the hype was first and foremost in the preview..."Highly Acclaimed...Best Picture...", etc.) are in the same position that liberals are with respect to their politics.
They cannot let people know the true nature of the film, the way liberal politicians cannot let their constituents know the true nature of their politics. As Richard Nixon once said about Alger Hiss: "If the American people knew the real nature of Alger Hiss, they would boil him in oil...", so would a large percentage of Americans who vote for liberal politicians without understanding their true nature.
And so it is with this film. I can easily see some people going to see it based on the preview, and being unpleasantly surprised. But perhaps not, I suppose one would need to live under a rock to be surprised.
Jay Severin, a libertarian/conservative radio talk show host in the Massachusetts area (yes...as strange as that sounds) put it best when he said that this part of a concerted effort by hollywood liberals to deconstruct America, take everything about it that is good, and corrupt or destroy it. He said (and I agree) the message it sends is "This is perfectly normal and common behavior amongst cowboys..." There is a lot to quibble about in this general statement, they are not cowboys, this is not portrayed as normal, etc. But I do not think the substance of what Mr. Severin said is wrong. When one looks at the hype of this homosexual movie, and where it comes from, I agree with him.
Good line! And it appears to be quite true.
I agree. And....The Academy Awards Presentations are also flushing themselves down the toilet. Normally, I would never advocate boycotts, and I won't do that here, but this is one dude that will not be tuning in to any of the award shows this spring. The movie nominees are all about fags, gays, homosexuals, hate religion, hate America, hate the US Military, hate US Business. love the Democrat "Traitor/Treason" Party!!! However, I'll bet not one Democrat shows up for any of these "freak" shows. They dare not be caught with Jon Stewart tending to the sheep, while the Brokeback Mountain boyus get it on!!!
I broke my back while being mounted by my gay partner alert !
hehe
What do you mean not getting good returns? The movie made back all it costs and then some. That is what we should be concerned with that people actually saw it!
I saw that promo a week or so ago. As I recall, the last scene showed two guys sitting on a hill looking at a herd of sheep in the flat lands below.
My reaction was, knowing the theme of the movie, that those sheep must be awful nervous.
I am at a loss here. You are telling me that the backers of this film are going to get rich off of it? Somehow or another I assumed that if mid-America did not go see it that it would be a financial flop. Perhaps it is sad but true that I am wrong. I just hope I am not.
The queers in the movie were shepherds.
The ad I saw on Christmas day called the movie "a classic american love story."
Could not believe it.
Well this is what they are going to be surprised about in the experience which will occur. From Family Media Guide Brokeback Mountain Review
Sexual Examples in context: A man kneels behind another man who is on his hands and knees and they engage in sodomy.
From pluggedinonline.com review
Several scenes show the two men groping each other and kissing. (Half the time it looks more like forceful mashing than kissing.) Once, the camera keeps staring as kisses give way to anal sex. (There's no nudity shown, but the sequence is explicit; it includes sexual motions and sounds.)
Give them turbans and the picture will be complete. FReeeeky!!
I went to the local multiplex yesterday to see another movie. Brokeback Mountain was showing on another screen. I went in to see how many people had bought tickets to it. To my surprise the theater was almost full, mostly older people. This is a conservative community in a red state.
If you search FR you'll find a thread where a FReeper witnessed a bogus 'SOLD OUT' placed on the ticket window at the start time for the movie. He was going to another movie and was curious if this was really so, so he looked in the theater where BBM was showing and only saw a few people. Anyway, he asked the manager about this and the guy refused to comment. Seems that public perceptions are being manipulated big time with this propaganda piece.
How about the promos on ABC TV for inJustice?
Where are these "thousands" of INOCENT people convicted each year???
I think they (liberals in Hollywood) know they won't win most of us over, but they are winning over your children. That's their goal. They figure they've worn you down with name calling and now you won't complain as they corrupt the minds of all the children of the world.
The not-so ambiguously gay duo.
