LANCASTER - An apartment complex near Avenue K and Gadsden Avenue in Lancaster was cordoned off as deputies searched for a suspected sniper who is believed to have shot at three deputies Thursday night.
A Lancaster Sheriff's Department team originally responded around 9 p.m. to a report of a shot fired that shattered a display window at the Lancaster Auto Mall's Suzuki Mazda dealership, in the 43000 block of Drivers Way.
The dealership's employees called 911. Upon arriving, the trio of deputies sent onto the scene said there was no other evidence of any other shots fired.
The rest of the team was dispatched off the scene.
As the trio continued the investigation, several shots rang out over the deputies' heads from across the street.
"It appears apparent to investigators that this shooting was a setup," said Lancaster Sheriff's Station Commander Capt. Carl Deeley.
When asked if it was a sniper, Deeley said, "That's exactly what it was.'
The deputies were not hit, but were pinned down by several rounds of gunfire, Deeley said.
The weapon is believed to be a 22-caliber rifle.

Probably so. It was still ongoing when I went to bed after 1 a.m. Do you know it took something along the order of three hours to get a freakin' K9 unit up here? The incident was in the 9-10 range, and the K9 arrived at 00:08. I made a note of it because I couldn't believe it.
The best thing about the rampant growth is that maybe - eventually - enough stuff will get built out there that it'll kill off those blasted winds!
I hate car salesmen also but this guy is a little over the line.
if it were really important, the K9s would have been flown up there.....but you are only the AV, not some dopey pursuit suspect in Irwindale.
You have a good point there. I just get so tired of seeing the dramatizing that I rarely watch the news... and I only watch FOX now days.
UGH.
Mike
See how you are!
We're not sharing our prison parolees and tumbleweeds. From now on! (I think those are our two biggest crops.)
Unfortunately, you'll find over time that Fox is one of the biggest perpetrators of emotions-as-news, anymore. I can't watch any of them now. Gotta just stick to the Internet.
"Every nut with a gun is always a sniper in these idiots eyes. If the shooter was a sniper, we'd have several dead cops right now. I hope the cops do catch the shooter but I wish these media prostitutes would use the proper phrasing for what they are dealing with instead of hyping it up."
You took the words right out of my mouth. It's like a bunch of Prima Donnas dancing in the spotlight. It seems as if they want to whip up a frenzy every time someone shoots out a streetlight. The cops want more funding and the press want the ratings, a match made in heaven.
Should that read AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, or, M16?
Do you think "Adam Henrys" meant "a$$ holes" or "agitated and hostile?"
It should read 'AR-15 semi-automatic rifle.' You are correct.
The combination of the guileful Antelope Valley Press, and Lancaster's Finest, is always entertaining. Unfortunately.
By the way, in response to the so-called sniper(s), they had deployed what can be assumed to be rank-and-file (non-SWAT) deputies with AR-15s on some rooftops. Can't be certain, but it sounded like the moment the proper people got wind of it, they were told to get the hell down from there and report to the CP.
** Also of, um, note: Using an armor-plated vehicle, tear gas, and flash bombs that produce an earsplitting tone in conjunction with blinding flashes, deputies eventually found both of the side-by-side apartments in the Villa Mirage complex empty.
I a$$umed it was the former, of course. :)
I assumed the same. :-)
