When Senators were Statesmen

I just came across the following statement by the late A.W.Tozer. It's sobering in light of all scandals that are swirling about Washington, D.C.
"It was the belief in the accountability of man to his maker that made America a great nation...

"It was the belief in the accountability of man to his maker that made America a great nation... Among those earlier leaders was Daniel Webster whose blazing eyes and fiery oratory often held the Senate spellbound. In those days the Congress was composed of strong, noble statesmen who carried the weight of the nation in their hearts and minds.
Someone asked: "Mr. Webster, what do you consider the most serious thought that has ever entered your mind?"
"The most solemn thought that has ever entered my mind is my accountability to my maker," he replied.
Men like that cannot be corrupted and bought. They do not have to worry if someone listens to their telephone calls. What they were in character and in deportment resulted from their belief that they would finally be accountable to God."
Echoes from Eden, 130.

Of course pork was not a strong consideration when the Constitution was written but the founders did put the responsibility for spending money at the initiation of the body nearest the people, the House. The chance to remove them occurred every two years.
The Senate was to consider weightier matters and oversee and approve or disapprove what the House had done. They could be removed only after six years of service, giving them the security to be free to do what was best for the country and from immediate retribution by the narrow interest of their state. Now the only difference is the House has a bigger trough and more pigs than the Senate.

Very true.
Which means we as a people need to get a handle on it and get our government working more along the lines of how it was designed. We've not been paying attention and the fox is running the henhouse.

We've not been paying attention and the fox is running the henhouse. You are right but we should give ourselves a little slack. They have become adept at hiding things in unrelated bills and in making bad legislation sound good. The media who are supposed to be our watchdogs have gone over to the other side, a side much more sinister than just spending money. In the meantime, that sinister side has been using stealth, lies, and deception to take over our schools, the media, and much of our government. We are now at the Custer's last stand stage with about the same odds.
However, we can do it with the aid of the internet and talk radio. Good people are the secret as laws have become too easily ignored. That is why when we get one, like President Bush, we should stop squabbling among ourselves over individual issues and back him. He is as good as we are going to get so we had better try to keep him and others like him.

Tozer was one of the greatest. About everything he said or wrote was very profound.

He was a CMA pastor out of Chicago, if I recall...
