Bishop Pilla Asks To Be Removed Bishop Will Not Share Reason

UPDATED: 12:05 pm EST January 5, 2006

CLEVELAND -- Cleveland's Catholic Diocese Bishop Anthony Pilla has written a letter to the Vatican asking to be replaced, NewsChannel5 reported.

Pilla, 73, will not disclose why he placed the request to retire. He said the reason is between him and the Vatican.

Usually, bishops are replaced when they are 75 years old, but can stay on in the post at the pope's request.

WEWS reported Pilla has suffered from a few health problems. He had a quadruple bypass in 1997 that was followed by an infection. He also had prostate cancer in 1999.

Pilla was asked if his health problems contributed to his decision to resign and he said he didn't want to get into that, and that he was doing what was best for the diocese.

On Friday, Pilla will celebrate his 25th anniversary as ninth bishop of Cleveland.

There are 800,000 Catholics in the Cleveland diocese.

There isn't an official timetable when a letter of resignation is submitted. Pilla said he is awaiting a response from Pope Benedict XVI and his staff.

He also has spent the past few years dealing with the clergy sex-abuse scandal.

Hopefully its just a choice because the time is right for him and not something more nefarious.

Hopefully, his request will be swiftly granted so that Cleveland may have a Roman Catholic bishop for the first time in 25 years. Pilla's policy of cheerleading for lavender lunacy is nearly unparallelled even among the AmChurch leftist bishops who used to dominate here in the US and are being replaced one by one by one.

If Pilla is afraid of personal repercussions over the lavender scandals in his diocese, may he remain available for prosecution and incarceration as a new and far more Catholic bishop cleans out the mess he is leaving.

Ah so he has coddled pedophiles....well then he should have been asked to leave, not the other way around.

*"Yo, Tony. Yeah, this is Luca. I work in the Vatican. Da Papa wants you to retire. Today. Capiche?"

Amen. The man is a world-class sissy.

I wish that just ONE queer AmChurch Bishop would end up in the slammer. Until one does, or until one is outed by a brother Bishop, we will know little has changed.
