Yet another nail in the coffin of government "of the people, by the people."

I try to resist, but every day I feel more and more as though I have no control over government.

Time was I would not use the term 'afraid' in reference to any branch of government, but I can honestly say that is my choice of words to describe my feelings on the judicial system.

It seems to flex its muscle at every opportunity to maintain, or strengthen, its powers over the other branches, but neither legislative or executive seem willing to defend themselves.

This is from the State Supreme Court that tried to steal the 2000 Presidential Election?

Big Suprise!

Floriduh voters have the judges they keep in office. Election 2000 should have opened a few eyes, as well as a number of other, shall we say "controversial" court rulings.

We could get rid of the entire voucher issue if we could just get the government out of the education business. That is the true root of the problem, not vouchers vs. no vouchers.

The schools are lousy because the government runs them. And like any gigantic bureaucracy, they are inefficient, corrupt, and incompetent. (Please don't flame me with tales of excellent teachers and administrators. I know they are out there. I was fortunate enough to be taught by some and I have teachers in my family. I'm speaking about the majority, not the exceptions.)

If schools were private, parents would have greater choices. There would be competition for price and for quality. Privatizing schools would not cure all problems and would present its own set of new problems, but I believe that the benefits would far outweigh the disadvantages.

Are these the same traitors who attempted to hand Al Gore the election through selective recounts which the Supreme Court had to stop?

This is the proof the 'elite' in Florida do not want children to be educated. They want them to remain uneducated and dependent.

"article IX, section 1(a) further states: “Adequate provision shall be made by law for a uniform, efficient, safe, secure, and high quality system of free public schools.” For reasons expressed more fully below, we find that the OSP violates this language. It diverts public dollars into separate private systems parallel to and in competition with the free public schools that are the sole means set out in the Constitution for the state to provide for the education of Florida’s children."

Are you still in love with the idea of state constitutions John? :)

Aren't vouchers only available in limited situations -- like when the public school in your area is an F school and remains so for a certain number of years, or if your child has documented special needs that may be better met at another institution (McKay Scholarship)?

Just who do they expect will benefit from such a ruling?

Nice to see Florida's governor leading the charge on this.
And his brother, the President.
It's too bad that after eight years of Republican control of the gubamint, the Dept. of Education and the teacher's unions are more entrenched and powerful than ever before.
Frickin' shame.

Frankly, this is not a surprise from FL's Supreme Court. And, I suspect this is actually not over yet.

The Florida Supreme Court is back doing what it does best - putting the "DUH" in FloriDUH.

Has anyone checked to determine if there is something in the water supply of Tallahassee that induces erratic insanity syndrome?

School vouchers is a wealth redistribution scheme from those of pay taxes to those who don't.

An Educational Tax Credit is the only way to reimburse taxpayers for their children private educational expenses. Return the money to taxpayers in the form of an ETC.

Rich people have choices. Poor people should send their kids to public schools.

Thus spake the FL Supreme Court.

No surprise. I hope the legislators can draft a new voucher statute that will pass muster.
The NEA fights any attempt to loosen their hold on our children. Once again the court has sentenced disadvantaged children to a 2nd rate education. Without vouchers we have a system of seperate but unequal. Where is the outrage?

Let me stick in my two cents. I taught in both public and private schools from 1868 to 2005.

In the typical public school nowadays, if the teacher follows the watered down, time wasting curriculum a typical elementary students receives more education from alternate resources from "Leap Frog" educational toys, kid web sites, and certain cable TV channels.

After retiring from full time teaching in 2000 (in California), I continued to keep my toe in the classroom by substitute teaching (in Nevada). If a 4th grade teacher faithfully follows the curriculum, a student is fortunate to receive an hour of hardcore math, reading and writing lessons. Much of the day is devoted to mind-numbing busyness, waiting for slower students to catch up and discussions of social issues.
