NBC affiliate WTWO in Terre Haute, Indiana, has become the first station to announce they will not be showing "The Book of Daniel.
"We expect other NBC affiliates will join WTWO in their decision, said American Family Association (AFA) Chairman Donald E. Wildmon.
He also said that NBC is having trouble finding sponsors for the show. AFA says it has been notified by several companies that they have no plans to sponsor the show.
"It appears that NBC will be forced to fill the available ad spots with distressed merchandise ads which are sold at pennies on the dollar of the going rate, and with make good ads which bring in no money to the network, Wildmon said.
Wildmon said that other NBC affiliates, bombarded with hundreds of phone calls protesting the manner in which Christians and Christianity are depicted, will refuse to carry the program. "We are tired of NBCs anti-Christian bigotry, he stated.
The programs main characters include Daniel Webster, a drug-addicted Episcopal priest; his alcoholic wife; his son, a 23-year-old homosexual Republican; his daughter, a 16-year-old drug dealer; a 16-year-old adopted son who is having sex with the bishop's daughter; his lesbian secretary who is sleeping with his sister-in-law; and a very unconventional white-robed, bearded Jesus who talks to the priest.
According to media reports, the show is written by Jack Kenny, a practicing homosexual who describes himself as being "in Catholic recovery, is interested in Buddhist teachings about reincarnation and isn't sure exactly how he defines God and/or Jesus. "I don't necessarily know that all the myth surrounding him (Jesus) is true, he said.

"I thought we were in favor of free speech. I guess that applies only to people we agree with." Wrong. Free speech is about the government preventing people from speaking (sort of like how a policitical group can't air advertisements about candidates 60 days before the election). A Christian emailing NBC and telling them that their family will not watch this show and will not buy from the advertisers who support it is the exercising of speech, not the abrogation of it.

I thought we were in favor of free speech. I guess that applies only to people we agree with. ????????Where do you get off saying that??
Looks to me like NBC is showing their free speech in producing the show, and the audience their mostly Christian American audience is just starting their free speech calling them on the mat for this evil crap.
All kinds of free speech happening here........to bad NBC has not figured out what is good for business and what is bad for it, but then again perhaps it is not so bad after all showing more and more people exactly who runs these major networks.

Do you mean to say that these people should not be permitted to conduct a peaceful campaign or speak publicly against this show?
Because, if you don't, what's the problem then?

I completely agree with your first paragraph, but I think the sister part is a false analogy.
Bottom line, the show is going nowhere anyway.

I've got the the Tivo set to record it so I can see what all the fuss is about. How about performing a public service and posting a list of sponsors, so that those who like the show will know who to thank.

This gives the AFA something to do I guess. I like your approach better. Looks like we're in the minority here unfortunately.

Remember there's strength in numbers! Don't watch it and it will fade away.......very simple.Yes, but the real trick is in getting your number counted. Very few of us have Nielsen boxes or journals, so we are nonexistent to the networks. Activism may be the only way to be seen if you are not part of A.C. Nielsen's statistical sample.

I thought we were in favor of free speech. I guess that applies only to people we agree with. As if NBC would ever consider running a show about a Muslim mullah who's wife is routinely beaten, daughter is honor-killed for wearing makeup, son plan terrorist attacks, other daughter is married off at age of 11, brother plots more terrorist attacks, and a long haired apparition of Mohammed who rattles his sword and exhorts to kill the infidels.

Sure, I'll share whatever information other Freepers want including advertisers.
It looks like an episode is scheduled to be recorded Friday 1/6 at 9PM called "Temptation and Forgiveness. - Gracie arrested for posession of marijuana; Judith confronts Daniael."

The sister analogy was the first thing that came to mind, but if you replace the word sister with faith/religion then you pretty much have what the uproar is about.
Anyway, sometimes people get up in arms about certain things (i believe there is some validity to this particular uproar) but I hope one day we can return to the days when not everything had to be so PC. This show could of had a chance if it just didn't pile on all the BS circumstances, drug addicts, gay men, gay women, drug dealing, adultery, etc. Damn if they have the minister beat his wife this show could have been picked up by the Lifetime Channel.
This is just a NBC trying to out due shows like Desperate Housewives. Shock for the sake of shock.

Sheesh - a hallucinatory drug addict priest, an alcoholic wife, a gay son, a drug dealer daughter, a lesbian secretary...sounds like a real bundle of chuckles. Sort of reminds me of Father Knows Best, well, except for the drugs, alcohol, and deviant sex...

I'd encourage all Freepers to contact your local affiliate, as well. Why not just be a man and use your remote and don't watch it? Let others decide for themselves if they want to watch it. We don't need you to be a school marm for us.

Clearly it's not accurate. There's no mention of the bishop buggering the son and splitting the collection plate take to fund trips to South Beach and Key West.
