JERUSALEM (Reuters) - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was rushed to hospital on Wednesday, ahead of a scheduled heart procedure, senior political sources said.
The Israeli medical service ZAKA said the cause of the early hospitalization was a cardiac condition.

What happens if the Israeli PM dies while in office? Is there an equivalent to our VP, or does a new election need to be held right away?

JERUSALEM - Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharon was rushed to a hospital late Wednesday after feeling ill, his office said.
Israeli media reported that he apparently suffered a second stroke. The announcement said he was taken to Jerusalem's Hadassah Hospital, where he was scheduled to undergo a heart procedure Thursday to close a hole that contributed to his Dec. 18 stroke.
Israeli media and the Israeli rescue service said Sharon was taken to Soroka Hospital in Beersheba, not far from his ranch, where he was resting before the Thursday procedure.

Bad news for Sharon. I hope it was a mild stroke and that surgery can still take place.

Alexander Haig???
Seriously, prayers sent up for the man. I have to wonder if they test for things like poisoning and the like. Not that I would ever cast aspersions on those wacky Palestinians.
Didn't he just have a stroke? I wonder if that's linked to his cardiac problems. Does anyone know the line of succession in Israel?

They'd better close that hole. My dear mother has one (a hole) present from birth, but, it is not what is considered to be a "communicating" hole, so is harmless. Sounds like Sharon's got a communicating hole. They'd better close it fast. I have to wonder why it has not been discovered before now.
