The longer it went on last night the more I began to wonder what really was happening.

I begun to wonder the longer they were talking on LIVE camera about a large number of ambulances parked near the entrance to the mine with their lights flashing in the distance.

I was just at the grocery store and the big headline on the Settle Times, was "12 ARE ALIVE."

I'm not about to fault the print media over this. They have a specific overnight print deadline to meet, and oftentimes with national stories their source is the AP.

I remember going to college, and living in an apartment, I subscribed to the Billings Gazette, and that day's paper would show up on my front step at 3:00 in the morning. They have a print deadline of midnight each night.

"The signs were all there in hindsight"

I heard a Fox reporter gingerly try to get a relative at the church say who exactly told him the miners were alive.....the reporter never got an answer......

the signs were there....no press conference for one.....I felt there was something going on but I thought it was that the miners were really in bad shape and some would not make it......

I just caught a replay of Shep's 7:00 show. Jamie Colbe took the press to task in a commentary. Not forceful, but I that is her manner I think.

Still, she is the only one I have seen put the standard of truth out there for all.

What degree is that? What degree is it when the very same family members are now deriding the company and media for passing off lies?

Church bells are ringing. People are celebrating. Family members are saying they've been told the miners are alive and will be coming to the church in an hour. That's confirmation to a degree that you don't postpone the live shot for a company or government spokesman to start a press conference. It's ridiculous to blame the media for "passing off lies." They reported what was happening around them.

Blaming the media for going live with this story in this instance is no different than telling these family members that they should not have celebrated "the rumor" because there had been no "official" word. If you fault the press, then these family members should be chastised for getting excited, singing and being happy before they'd received confirmation.

That was Jessica McClure. Jessica McClintock is a fashion line like Gunne Sax. Made up name like Aunt Jemima, Betty Crocker and Ann Page, eh?

GROAN. I've heard about this from a dozen posters already, Gray. One can never live down the tiniest mistake here on FR! One of the many reasons I love this place!!

I'm sorry. I came late to that thread, and usually I have better sense than to respond before reading the whole...you know what. :)

The media should most certainly be faulted. And Anderson Cooper blaming the mining conglomerate for not correcting his network's mistaken reporting is attrocious.

For CNN to say they had 6 or 7 or 8 sources doesn't give them a pass...the news was completely wrong.

Like I said, it's fine. I knew the name did not have quite the right "ring" to it. Everyone who corrected me, including yourself, was not at all rude about it.

I like the way FReepers educate one another. It's good for keeping my brain tuned up! ;-)

Absurd. You're suggesting that for three hours while church bells rang and people celebrated around them the media should have sat on it and waited for confirmation from the company or a government official. That's simply absurd. But hey, on the up side, you find yourself in agreement with Greg Mitchell.

Exactly...no one meant any harm, We all wanted to believe it. I knew something wasn't right when they said the miners would be joining the families at the church in an hour...that just wouldn't have been possible..The miners would need medical attention and "debriefing" first.
