Where is your evidence for your assertion that 'it was broadcast as fact to many of the relatives sitting at home watching the news' please?

If there were relatives sitting at home, rather than at the mine, I would've thought they would have been as likely to hear from the relatives who were at the mine (who, of course, were the ones who told the media)

The company did not know the facts as you have stated, said company informed the state police to get word to the church, that the facts were not in, the WV SP dropped the ball, they did not do so. IMO, the company was the responsible party, the LMSM was the irresponsible party.

The company was not in charge of the command center, it was a joint command, shared by the Feds, WV state, and the company. No one did not do anything unless all three parties agreed.

Get your facts straight, you are hyperventilating same as the LMSM.

Do consider the source of all the harping. While some of the items they are speaking about may be detrimental to the mining operation, I imagine some are downright silly.

Ever noticed the highway construction workers wearing hardhats? Is OSHA afraid the sky is going to fall?

Imagine how much more flammable/combustible the mine would be and how many more explosions and deaths would be caused by this 'safety' measure. ! I am in a field that 'too much safety' can cause more harm in totality than good. No, I am not management, union, nor financially responsible either way...sometimes there is "TOO MUCH SAFETY".

Do you not realize that tanks of oxygen spaced every so many yards would be a fire hazard, and a likely source of explosion when combined with coal dust if one ruptured?

You don't know what you're talking about. Mining is dangerous, and it always will be.

I thought about that later. But, they have rails maybe they could design an emergency exit reinforced some kind of way. There should be more than one way out and in. There should be various escape tunnels.

It was obvious from the get go, that there were problems with media relations and basic communication, internally and externally. The company obviously had no plan in place. So it fell on Hatfield to feed the sharks a few times.

Hopefully, lessons learned.

The mine had to have at least one air shaft other than the main entry. I believe I saw two air shafts besides the main shaft.

There has to be at least one air shaft in order to ventilate the mine properly.

Please, try to read a little bit on this subject, before offering criticisms and suggestions.

I'll try, but there's not much published about mine design.. Are those one or two air shafts also escape passages?

Yet, when I look through the thread from last night, I see your name over and over breathlessly recycling these 'rumours'

Where exactly did I say I didn't buy into what they were saying?

But a relative who claims to have it from a company official is confirmation, to a degree.

What degree is that? What degree is it when the very same family members are now deriding the company and media for passing off lies?

There were plenty of relatives on TV all day today, saying that they heard it on TV.

The signs were all there in hindsight. I had a very, very brief nanosecond of doubt when I saw a shot of the conference room and a girl was sitting in the corner rubbing her temples.

There were maybe three or 4 in there and no one was jubilant.

The press is PAID to pick up on those nanoseconds whereas you & I are not. I am proud of the way Freepers search for truth. We have to put the waders on every now and again, but the truth wins hands down everytime.

Well, that's the difference between reporters and "journalists". Reporters used to have good instincts. That's what led to most of their scoops. Now they depend on someone inside leaking to them and they just type it up and head off to the cocktail circuit.

Hemmer is the only one I saw today (as well as some of the FOX inside anchors) who had that sick look on their faces. The others were totally oblivious and too busy blaming someone else. I must say my respect for him rose quite a bit.

I was watching CNN and Fox and one thing didn't seem right to me.

One of the reporters was saying that the Mining Company/rescue team was "tearing down" a helicopter air lift area. This was in the period after the false news had been distributed that they were alive, and when the rumor was circulating that the men were going to actually come to the church to see their families. I heard this with my own ears.

The reporter seemed surprised at the helicopter pad being moved -- and made some offhand statement that it was windy, and perhaps the helicopters wouldn't be safe.

It occurred to me that no one knew what was going on, that the reporter was just guessing and chatting. And it seemed not reasonble to close down the airlift program, before they knew FOR SURE the seriousness of the injuries to the miners.

That was my first hint that all what not as it appeared. I went to bed, and heard on the radio during the night about the miscommunications. It made me sick.

I am basing 'My opinion" on regular run of the mill real life...rumors get started either by 1) a vicious gossip or 2) someone overhears just enough words to 'guess' (incorrect or not) the content of the conversation and passes it on without intention to harm.

Since you asked what I based my opinion on...I would like to know where you think the family members received their info if it does not fall into a category that I provided above.
