(Update Per Fox News 11 of 13 Miners Dead at 3:00AM EST 1/4/06 One Miner in critical condition)
*******
Fox News - 12 found alive!
True but any harm the families incurred had nothing to do with the media. It was actually the families that were informing the media - not the other way around.
Good post
Good post.
They are never going to name the person that started the rumor, but last night several people on CNN said that it was the governor's aide who was working in the Command Center; they said she heard the communications and RAN from the CC trailer to the church, threw open the doors, threw up her arms, and shouted, "Praise the Lord! Hallelujah! They are alive."
It went downhill from there. ALL of the rumors were spread by the people and the press; the governor nor the company made ANY announcements.
Exactly.
I thought the media had an obligation to get confirmation of information like this. My opinion is that the media, instead of holding back and waiting for confirmation, helped spread and legitimate the rumor.
So the news media ran with a rumour, yet again. What a mess, these poor families.
Your whole post #523 was very well stated, but I especially related to the above sentence. That was exactly my thoughts during the period of false euphoria. It was a though that man's death was being dismissed. Many a reporter burbled on about the happy ending to the story during those three hours while barely mentioning the man who died.
We saw exactly the same phenomenon after Hurricane Katrina. National reporters rush to the scene, become personally involved in the events, lose their veneer of objectivity, rush on air with the first post-hurricane impressions which turn out to be false (New Orleans was spared), then careen to the next false angle (slow government response; tens of thousands dead; massive looting; etc.).
What a total waste the media has become.
They were reporting RUMOR as fact. They never verified anything.
I was referring to any harm that the families of the miners may have been exposed to due to the miscommunication.
In this case, the media is blameless as the families came running out of the church and informed the media - not the other way around. The media then reported what the families had told them.
One could argue that the media should have tried to obtain confirmation from the command post before putting it out to the nation, but that doesn't have anything to do with the actual families of the miners - they already had the bad information and they were the ones feeding it to the media.
Amen, dear Patty, and I Join you in Praying that the Surviver doesn't have Brain Damage.
Please Grant our Request, Great King, through the Name of Him Whom our Souls Love. Wrap All who are Hurting in Your Sustaining Peace, as we Agree Together in God's Grace, amen.
BS, the news media also bears responsibility. The news report should have been "there is one report that the miners are alive, however, this has not been confirmed by any other source". The NEWS MEDIA basically ran with an unsubstantiated rumour. If that's satifactory to you, than you have rather low standards.
I'll be happy to take apart the mine company and others when more info comes out as to what took place, but right now, it is ABUNDANTLY CLEAR the news media FAILED in their job. Yet again.
Good point and I think that this is what happened here. I likely scenario is that the faulty information made its way to the families via a well meaning citizen and the families started celebrating. The governor (on the way to the church for other reasons and unaware of the faulty information) was swamped by the families as they left the church.
Someone in the press then asked the governor how he felt and not knowing the full story yet, he just says something vague like "miracles happen in West Virginia" - this was taken as confirmation by the governor.
I've got a bit of perception myself and it tells me she drinks, smokes and eats herself to excess..Oh, and she constantly puts those ugly fingernail fangs of hers in her mouth. She's a phony mess.

Oops.."her" = "their"...sorry.
Exactly.
I think they were referring to Jessica McClure the little girl in the well in Midland TX (I remember that because we lived there at the time and everyone in town was glued to the tv watching). A much happier outcome than this sad story.

Amen to your Heartfelt Post, Milagro. Our Lord Comfort and Bless these poor Families.
Yes, and they might also have been performing CPR on some or all 12, including the guy who's still alive. If one guy lasted that long, certainly some, if not all of the others might not have died more than a brief time before, possibly even moments after, the rescuers arrived. We don't know, and may never know unless the first responders choose to speak publicly. However, I can certainly understand how the initial misunderstanding occurred.
