(Update Per Fox News 11 of 13 Miners Dead at 3:00AM EST 1/4/06 One Miner in critical condition)
*******
Fox News - 12 found alive!
I changed to cnn and msnbc when Jerry referred to himself as a "good luck charm" for the miners. He was the most disgusting of all the talking heads. Donna Fiducia wasn't far behind.
It wasn't exactly unconfirmed, even if it was wrong. The rumor started and was believed first at the church where the family members were. The rumor did not start with the media, it went from the family members at the church to the media.
I heard the nephew of one of the miners telling Bill Hemmer on Fox News last night that he had been told he would see his uncle within an hour. He even gave the name of the company foreman who told him that.
That's confirmation to a point. When family members are saying they've been told their relatives are alive, the press has a reasonable expectation to trust that.
-- me too. I felt for him all night.
****
Just perhaps.... "it is possible that some or all were still alive when initial contact was made."
"CO2 poisoing is very insidious and unfortunately too quick once the CO2 levels reach the saturation point. Remember Apollo 11? One of the biggest dangers the Astronauts faced was CO2 saturation of the atmosphere inside the capsule. Even with plenty of Oxygen the CO2 levels would have killed them had they not be able to jury-rig an air scrubber."
"While this is unfortunate, and tragic, on many levels, let us not be too hasty in judgement. It's possible that the people who falsely reported probably did so in good faith i.e., they thought what they were saying was true, and it might have been, just not for long enough."
OMG. Yours was the first post I read this morning; thank you so much for all that information because I got up and turned on the television and was stunned. I don't see how a mistake like this can happen.
Bad enough before to expect the bad news, but now having it happen like this. I'm speechless at what this has done to the families.
Right...'cuz he's a CEO and CEOs are evil...since he is evil he becomes responsible for correcting the media's mistakes. I'm with you!
Hardly any of this makes sense.
Applying the MSM's Katrina Standard, ignorance of what is being broadcast by schlock TV news reporters is no excuse for a company (or government) official. How dare an official not be tuned in to all news stations constantly!
I watched the cable shows last night, witnessed all the jubilation, stayed up to see the miners finally emerge from the mine.
After a bit I shrugged. I figured they planned to take the survivors to the hospital for a quick check over. Then, as I figured for the delay, that the plan was for the guys to clean up and present themselves to the public via perky Katie or some such.
So I quickly made a post to my Blog, smug that I would be one of the first Bloggers up with the good news.
Only to find out this morning that I was so wrong. Even sent out an email to my group with the header great big "They are Alive!".
I feel like two cents.
Wonder if the Lamestream feels the same way. Because frankly every one of them, and I kept clicking through them all...Anderson, Geraldo, Rita... SHOULD have inserted a caveat that the info had NOT yet been confirmed.
Not one of them did.
Another nail in the coffin of the Lamestream. Because I don't care about rumors and such. Those sorts of things happen in a case like this. And for sure the mining company waited entirely too long to correct the record.
People will learn that just reporting rumors isn't objective Journalism. ANYBODY can do that.
Remember when the Lamestream lambasted Bush for not watching THEM at the convention center?
Now the American public will be increasingly wary. Any one of us could take a camera to a locale and report RUMORS for God's sake!
My God....I went to bed at 1am joyous that they have been found...my hubby just woke me up to tell me this news....I'm stunned..
Hi don-o....I'm speechless this a.m......
'''''I meant to add: I also suspect this was the result of the rescuer/communicator consciously putting the good news first '''''
There is also a very strong possibility that the news purveyor was a United Mine Workers of America plant in the official area tasked with the responsibility for bypassing the official chain of communications controlled by "the Company"
The UMWA is perpetually at war with "the Company" and such a plan and course of actual action should not be discounted.
It doesn't make sense because we don't know exactly what happened, it's that simple. You can't make sense of it if you don't know where the miners were in relation to where the blast occured and where the bad air was.
As I recall, the first rescue effort wasn't able to proceed because they were stopped by bad air.
If the survival kits the miners had gave them an hour of air and if trapped/located in a "bubble" of good air- they had 2 choices- barricade themselves and hope for rescue before air runs out (their air plus whatever air where they are) or attempt escape through unknown obstacles.
It would seem they opted to barricade themselves (as I believe they are trained). Given the one survivor, that would seem to have been the right choice if rescue had been sooner. Unfortunately they simply weren't able to get to them faster because of the bad air in the mine.
That, other than debris and/or shaft collapse, is the barrier to quick rescue.
I hope your wife is okay.......I went to bed at 10:30....flipped channels on the tv, saw they were alive...got back up logged on to FR and stayed up til 1am....went to bed joyous with the news they were alive....Hubby wakes me up at 6am to tell me this....I'm speechless....
Whew- I know. I woke up at 5...very hard to wrap one's mind around this when first waking up, isn't it?
(Three hours later it's still bizarre)
The media is so proccupied with being first with a given story that they have become quite sloppy in their reporting. If you notice many news reports are peppered with "if" "maybe" "alleged" "could be" "might be" as they speculate and pontificate on the subject or incident at hand. Sadly there is plenty of good factual news that could fill up the hours of airtime but they just can't tear themselves away from a "dramatic" or gossipy story.
I went to bed after they found one dead, I remember thinking if they even find one alive it will be a miracle......and that's exactly what they found -- just one alive. I completely missed the drama.
RIP to the twelve who succumbed. May the Lord heal this survivor in body and soul. I ask this in Jesus name. Amen.
I'm trying to catch up on the threads from where I was before I went to bed....read your posts about Bill Hemmer...he's on now
Assuming they ever back track this and determine where the bad info came from, I'll bet you'll be proven correct.
